It's Wachovia Dealer Services, it was a wrong # for me looking for someone I don't know

I got a call from this number saying it was Wells Fargo and they wanted me to provide a reference for someone else.  They left this on my home answering machine and my husband left me the message. I called them back the following day and they immediately wanted my SSN for "verification".  When I asked why they needed (even though I knew better) she said it was to look up my account.  
Me - Wouldn't you need an account number then? And why even that if I'm providing a reference for someone else?
Transfer to another department - she wanted to know the name of the person requesting the reference
Me-Shouldn't you have that considering you called me yesterday?  My husband didn't leave that in the message.
Them - well we don't keep track of who we call daily
Me - thinking (Then why did you tell me to call you back).  To them - Well, good luck with that.

Double checked with Wells Fargo  and this is NOT one of their numbers - surprise, surprise :)

Got a call from this number and they claimed they were from Wells Fargo Dealer Services and asked me to provide my SSN and home address.  When I told the lady I was uncomfortable providing that info over the phone she switched into "ghetto" mode and asked me "well how do I know who I am talking to?"  I politely told her that I have no idea who she is either and I would not provide that info on the phone.  I am up to date on my vehicle payment and this was clearly a fishing scam.  I asked if I could call her back, after work, at the customer service number and she replied that I must use the 888 number she provided.  Clear sign of a scam in progress.  Do not provide any SSN info over the phone.  EVER!
