    Confused
Yesterday I had a message to call a Mr. Lopez of Portfolio Processing at 888-582-8885 ext 371.  The Message I received stated Process Server in my home county.  Being curious I returned the call to have a woman tell me that she was with Fortune Portfolio and that they actually only did process serving in Florida, but that she was trying to take a statement from me regarding the circumstances regarding an old Visa credit card that was trying to get a judgement against me.  I informed her that I had no idea what she was talking about.  She said nothing about being a debt collector or this being an attempt to collect a debt. She simply told me that she would put down no comment.

After doing a little internet research I called back and spoke to Mr. Lopez trying to find out what this was about. He, as the lady before, neglected to mention trying to collect a debt while he informed me that this was regarding an old First Card that was going on seven years since the last payment.  So to beat some seven year timeline they were trying to move forward quickly.  I informed him that the statute of limitations in Texas was four years on credit card debt and that I didn't even recall ever using a First Card.  He asked me If I wanted to speak with the lady in litigation that I had spoken with earlier.

With all of this sounding strange (and very much like an attempt to collect a perceived debt) and considering that he couldn't even give me a complete account number of an alleged credit card, I faxed Mr. Lopez a letter requesting that he mail me any information that he had showing that I owed First Card anything, and in this fax I instructed him to only communicate with me via mail to my home address rather than calling me at work.

Today I received a message stating that a VERY RUDE person named Tamika (866)428-6589 ext 11064 wanted me to call her while refusing to even say what company she was with.  This 800notes website traces her phone number back to Portfolio Recovery Associates, LLC.  If these companies are related, and I have no idea if they are, it seems like someone broke the law.

I have very good credit and am very confused what these folks are up to.

    Re: Confused
I too received a call from this number. I spoke to someone there, a lady who I didn't get a name of. She said they called me to take a "statement" from me to process a claim. I didn't understand what she meant by "statement". She said she processes claims for NAN. When I asked what all this was about, she told me I was being processed for a credit card owed to Discover. I had a Discover card about 5 years ago, and actually forgot about this $1,200. So when I asked if I could just pay the debt, she said NO. She then went on to explain that they only process, they are unable to accept payment. So I called Discover, they told me this account was "sold". Who knew a credit card could be sold? I didn't! They forward me to a Collection Agency out of New York called Capital Management. I spoke to a "Gloria Brunswick", she gave me the details and I paid a settlement of only $660! I have a letter that she emailed to be as confirmation. Thank goodness I researched this! So, I guess they aren't a collection agency! I called that processing office back to make sure they knew I paid my credit card off. I was told by a Mr. Lopez that my "File" had been closed. I guess the collection agency notified them.
So I say, just research the credit card company and pay them directly before anything is processed. Or if your not responsible write to the credit reports too.
Just thought I would add my two cents. I must say they were very professional all seemed strange, but nice folks.
