Extortion scam. Such things as you heard are used, and fear is meant to divert your attention away from reality. You "cut a deal with them", nobody will show up. Stay ahead of the caller by being aware this is a threat that's not forewarned. Ignore it all.

I'm sorry to hear this.  Since you were kind enough to post about your experience her, I bet you would be kind enough to tell consumer what the name of the plaintiff was in the paperwork they served you at work.  This way interested parties can do their homework on this group.

Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation, and I hope this works out for you

    Hi "ashley"

No one believes your lies.  If as you say "i thought it was a scam too until i got served at my job' then, you have no difficulty providing the plaintiffs name, right?  It's on the "documents" you received, right?

Have you ever thought about seeking treatment for your fentanyl addiction?

If you know who this number belongs to (who DOES it belong to, by the way), why did you come to a phone number lookup site? The only reason i can think of is to do damage control. Or, well, TRY to do damage control.

This is the "process server" extortion scam.  It seems to be really popular these days with the felons at these criminal enterprises that are pretending to be debt collectors.  So popular in fact that they send scum like "ashley" here to try to convince people that they actually got served legal papers.  Sort of hard to serve something that doesn't exist.

They mention that they have received a Fax document, to create the sense of urgency and tell you that they are a “process server”. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (with a made up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work they need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and have to be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there is actually a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

You mistyped the second half of your post. It should say "I thought it was a scam and I was right."

    Wasn't born yesterday
A few days ago a debt collector that I get mail from called and I told them "do not contact me!" The debt I have is over 4 years old and in CA a debt over 4 years is past the statue of limitations where a judge can order a judgement against you. I told them to take me to court or leave me alone knowing full well if they did that a judge would throw this out.  A couple days later get a call from this guy with no caller ID so I let it go to voicemail. The voicemail  cleans he's a process server and that I'm being sued and that he's going to serve me papers the following day at home and if I'm not home then they will go to my work. Anyway so I went on to my counties page to see if there was any kind of hearing against me and I didn't see one and then I went on Google and basically saw that this call is from debt collector and it is just ploy to get you to make some kind of agreement with them.
