I receive a call first from 860-222-0697 telling me to call back 888-684-2557 about a debt I owed back in 2008. They claim to be Hoffman associates and claimed I was being sued. I told them to email me and I receive Steven Vargas admin@legalaidpro.com. Try to inquire more on information but he got rude and say people like you just don't want to pay their debt. All I wanted to do do was make sure this was legit due to scammer.

Received a threatening call from an alledged collector on April 20, 2022 claiming I owed a debt to Wright Patt Credit Union in Ohio.  I haven't had any accounts with WPCU since 2009 or before.  They claimed to be sending a process server out of Jessamine County Ky with paperwork and told me if they couldn't serve me, there would be a "failure to appear" record when the case goes to court.  I called Jessamine County Courts and there are no open records in their system.  I am ignoring this scammer and hope others due the same.

Someone called my job and said they’d be serving a warrant for an unpaid credit card from 2008. I was a broke college student then and didn’t even have a job. When I called them a man answered and was incredibly rude and provided me with a case number. I googled the number and now see that this might’ve been a scam

Initially my wife received a call on 4-15-22 from a different number, I forgot what the number was, to call 888-684-2557 about a debt I had with WAMU/Providian from 2005 - 2007.  After my wife called that number she was told I was being sued  and they gave her a case number.  My wife was then told to call 213-460-2349, this went to a person named Kevin Segola.  This initially sounded legit, they wanted $3500, down from $7500, this was from a time I had a lot of unpaid debt, which my wife helped me pay off around 2011-2012.  We did initially fall for this.  We offered $2000 for 1 payment, then the rest in a month.  He immediately agreed to $2000.  We did initiate a transfer to him for $2000, but the payment goes to united payment center and not Hoffman and Associates.  They have a recording of my wife saying we agree to the payment.  When I received the payed in full email I called the 800 number on the letter head, that number was a dish network number.  I searched for the address on google earth and couldn't find the address.  I then called my bank and was able to stop the payment.  Kevin Segola called me again on 5-3-22and said the check came back as insufficient funds.  I told him what I searched, of course he said the phone number could be a misprint and that his office was in one of the tall buildings at that address.   I searched for the court case that he initially gave my wife and that case number did not exist.  The email was from Steven Vargas admin at legal aid pro.  He said he would contact our bank to get the money because of the recording he has of my wife.

You could not have been legally sued for that alleged debt.  You never, ever pay a debt collector until they have followed the letter of the law.  By entering into a new contract you may have reset the Statute of Limitations.  This outfit won't sue you because they are crooks but it doesn't mean that someone else might not try in the future.  WAMU was purchased by Chase and not Providian.  I would suggest that you contact your bank and change your account numbers.  Also, please tell us where you mailed that check to.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation.  It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.  If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Since you received a letter I have two questions.
    1.  What is the address and company name on that letter?
    2.  Did the letter contain the legally required language that I previously posted?
