Caller threatening legal action but wont tell me anything because I sounded "unsure" and he'd hate to give me someone else's information. (I intentionally sounded vague for sheer amusement) I proceeded to notify the caller that I am me, and realize the seriousness of his call based on my caller ID stating SCAM LIKELY. (Sarcasm) The scam is based on old debts that went unpaid but if you make even a small payment, they can come after you for the balance again. In some states, if you pay any amount on a time-barred debt or even promise to pay, the debt is 'revived.'

Called my sisters phone tell hr it was a legal matter I would know what its about. umm no thanks with your scam.

So e guy called me asking about some balance I owed ta bank I have never heard of before ND that I needed to my asap or they take all my belongings as soon as I said I would notify my attorney about this issues they hung up on me

Toatal scam the idiot made me cry at work had me all worried for nothing he sounded so real. Said my hubby had an account with outstanding  overdraft charges. He said if we didnt pay he'd garnish my hubbys wages and something about our credit. I feel like i was taken advantage of he scared me so bad Im traumatized. Good thing my sister was there at the time and told me hang up its a scam.... Hope no one falls for this like I almost did.😭😭😭😭

A vague scare tactic message designed to panic a victim into calling back. They don't know who they have called unless you confirm who you are, so what can they "process without your participation" if they haven't told you who they are talking about?

Most debt collectors will use a certain amount of pressure to convince you to pay the debt. After all, they often don't get paid unless you pay. Be suspicious of a debt collector who uses an unusual amount of pressure to get you to pay immediately, particularly if they also use scare tactics to get you to pay right away. For example, a debt collector is scamming you if it :

• threatens you with a lawsuit and tells that you can avoid the lawsuit by paying right away
• Says a Process Server  or Courier is coming with papers to sign
• Threatens to call / go to your place of employment
• Insists you have been notified, served or are non-compliant via phone message(s)
• Refuses to give a company name or verifiable Contact source
• Refuses to send proof of debt via US mail

A sure sign of a debt collection scam is a collector that wants to you to pay via wire transfer or another method that can't be traced. If the payment method can't be traced, you'll have a harder time getting the authorities involved.

If the creditor sounds completely foreign, or you know you never had an account with that business, there's a chance it's a scam. Never pay a collection you don't recognize. You have the right to request written proof of the debt from the debt collector before you send payment.

caller "David Hoffman" with a noticeable Indian accent, said he works for Google, and I need to pay $99 to reinstate my Google account.  Had all my info, Facebook acct, email, address etc.  When I refused to pay via telephone he sent me a code number to my cell phone, then said he would instead send info to my email so I could pay that way,   Tried to keep me on the line for ages.   was looking up my business' Google account while I was on line and kept on and on.   ANNOYING   I didn't give him any payment info.  Basically hung up on him
