It's called spoofing and is probably illegal, but, since, in my case, it's collections people, they don't care; they would rather take the chance that their company will get fined and that they, by getting you to pick up, might get the call recipient to pay a delinquent debt, and, thereby, collect a commission, for themselves

It's stupid, but they are bored, so they put in a number they think is cute

Some company will try and sell u something, and tell u if you try this or that, u can cancel this product within 30 days,
But they will still charge you or even hound u to pay them.
Some company will foul ur bill up just to make more money, and try to blame u for their foul method of doing business.
Most people don't have the time to fool with these Companies, or think they can't win.
One Company I did business with would debit my card twice every other  month, and after they made interest off of every one money, they would put the money back in ur account, if u call them to inquire about it, That's what I call Corporate stealing.
