Did not get a phone call but got a letter from a car rental company stating that I owe money. This phone number was on the "letterhead".  Be careful!  .

I got a letter like that too.  And I didn't rent a car and was not even in the city it was rented from.  The really weird thing is that I called the rental agency at another number and SOMEONE did rent a car with my name on that date

Follow up:  I called the general Hertz number on their website, explained the situation, and was given contact info for someone in collections.  She removed my information from the rental record.  My license number was similar to that of the renter and the misdirected charge was likely related to that. You may be experiencing a similar mix up.
