- Rita replies to Katie"When you use a toll-free number to call a business, your phone number may be captured by a system called Automatic Number Identification (ANI). This technology automatically identifies and stores the number from which you are dialing. By matching your phone number with other lists and street address directories, your name and address can often be discovered and added to the company's calling and mailing list. Not only will the company that captured your number be able to use it, they can sell or share it with their affiliates."
After reading this I stay away from dialing the callers back from my personal phone. - Lis1pm they called no message left

Caller ID on phone I answered showed only an "incoming" call and that's why I answered it. The lady called me by my first name; said she was calling for the Children's Charity Fund. I asked how she got my number & she said she didn't have my number because the computer dialed it and she only had my name. That does not make any sense to me. After telling her I do not donate by phone, I hung up. I checked the caller ID on another phone in the house and found this number and unknown name. We pay monthly for an unpublished and unlisted number and have about 31 telemarketers calling us. I use this site to identify them and it has really been helpful. - LLSaid he was from Virginia Fraternal Order of Police and would I like to pledge money and get a sticker in the mail for pledging at Gold, Silver, or Bronze levels from 45 down to 25 bucks. I asked "why not mail me something and I'll return a check?" He said, right you're not supposed to give money over the phone. I said I'd pledge 25, he transferred me to another guy, the guy said "can I have your address so we can make sure we have the right one". I said "the last guy sent me to you to confirm my address, tell me the one you have already". He stated a nearby town and a zipcode I've never lived in, so I said "See ya later".

A million other places, and the Fraternal Odor of Police here in VA. I found out this morning when one called while I was blissfully dozing. MPI is known in AZ to hire felons and under 18's for its call center. This is likely the source of their high-quality brand of customer service. They generally pay between $7-$9/hr. and you can apply in person!
A few years back, I had one tell me that if I didn't donate, he would send the cops around. I cackled, and hung up. When I saw they had recently said that to someone else, I figure this information should come to light. Call them, let them know what you think of these practices, and the practice of "diverting" money destined for charities into their own pockets.
It's very hard to say how much of the money is stolen. This one says only 15% of collected money is donated. http://www.oag.state.ny.us/charities/pennies05/2005%20Pennies.pdf
This one says only 10%. http://www.secstate.state.nc.us/2007%20CSL%20Annual%20Report%20Combined.pdf
These writings by an employee mention a rate of 6%. http://www.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/713475
Another says 5% is donated. This is certainly a scam. Get 'em, Internet.- Caller: Midwest Publishing, Inc

- Tomrec'd a call always after 8pm. caller asks for spouse. Sometimes has a fit if i don't put her on the phone. I get calls almost every night and from different persons. I tell them not interested, don't call back, stop calling - but the call continue.

- MNgot a call from "MPI" asking for a donation to help keep "felons" off the streets and went on with this lengthy, very much unrehearsed speech intercepted with lots of "ums" and "ahs." when i politely said, "sorry i can't donate this time." there was silence. then he hung up.

- ayn randwichmpi calls for non-profit groups so reporting them to the feds for the do not call list does absolutely nothing as non-profits and political groups are exempt from the dnc, your just wasting their time and preventing them from dealing with actual violations.
and it is true that 85-90% of money donated thru mpi stays at mpi, but they aren't stealing, the charities are fine with this, they pay nothing for mpi's services and get their 10 or 15 percent just for existing. mpi foots the bill for everything and all of their solicitors are supposed to disclose this if any one asks about how much money actually makes it to the charity in question. it's not really a scam, but anyone who knows this is undoubtedly going to chose to donate directly if at all. i'm not saying what they do is right, but anyone who just donates money without question when someone calls their phone can't expect anything better, and should expect much worse.
if you have any more questions about mpi i'd be glad to answer as i'm currently working at one of their call centers
