- BRI had about the same expirence. Asked me to call 888-739-2054. No answer. Something about documents. Just crazy... going to find me at my work place 😂 I'm retired!
- ScamReporter| 3 repliesI got a call from 888-739-2054 saying I had some outstanding unpaid debt from 20+ years ago that I was being taken to court for. Then they called and gave a family member this number 888-803-2770 for me to call back with a reference number. I don't have any unpaid debt and if it was really a law firm they would know there is a statute of limitations on collecting debt. This is some type of fake call or scammer. Beware!!
- Caller: Some?? Attorney's Office/Law Firm
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- BigA replies to ScamReporter| 2 repliesThere is not a statute of limitations on collecting debt. There is a statute of limitations on filing a lawsuit or threatening to file a lawsuit.
- ScamReporter replies to BigA| 1 replyIt doesn't matter anyway because I don't have any unpaid debt. It's a scam call.
- BigA replies to ScamReporterIt makes a huge difference because when people come here and read your misleading information they get confused and believe you when what you put is wrong. When you don't know what you're talking about you should keep your mouth shut.
- FFGing| 1 replyBigA - you are providing misleading information. The statute of limitations varies by state. In my state, if there is NO ATTEMPT to collect an old debt within three years it is considered "prescribed" meaning 3 years is the statute of limitations to collect. The point being, each state has different laws regarding debt collection. Either way this is a scam call! I received a call from this number just two weeks ago and finally listened to the voicemail. They were asking for an ex-boyfriend who passed away 15 years go...

- MikeHuntleton replies to FFGingSorry but South Africa is not a State of the United States.AI Overview wrote:In South Africa, debt often becomes "prescribed" (legally uncollectible) after three years if you haven't made payments, acknowledged the debt, or faced legal action (like a summons). This protects consumers from old, forgotten debts by setting a time limit for creditors to act, but making a payment or admitting you owe it restarts the clock, making you liable again, notes DebtBusters and reckless-lending.co.za.
No, it is you who is providing misleading info.FFGing wrote:BigA - you are providing misleading information.
Maybe some FYI could help educate you:
The Law changes when a debt collector obtains the debt from an original creditor.AI Overview wrote:While the specific concept of "prescribed debt" as known in countries like South Africa (where it legally becomes uncollectible after a period if the creditor does nothing) isn't a direct U.S. law, the U.S. has Statutes of Limitations that set time limits for creditors to sue you for debt, after which it's harder to collect, and older debt eventually falls off credit reports (around 7 years), but the debt itself often remains, can be sold, and aggressive collection attempts (though not lawsuits) can still happen. So, there's a parallel idea of old debt fading, but in the U.S., you often have to actively dispute it and know your rights.
