- ALJust received a call from them. called from a number within my state. I didn't recognize the number so I let it go to voicemail. They left a message using my maiden name. I dropped my maiden when I got married....6 years ago. Last time I went by that name I lived in another state. Here in the past few weeks, I have gotten mail in my maiden name...

- ScottI did call this number back, as I received the same message as many others here stated. I started by asking for her name, said it was Jackie. Then when I asked the name of the company and location, she got very upset. When I asked how she knew my name, she said caller ID & really got cranky. LOL
She was not happy to be questioned & and said I hope you have your boots on and hung up. This is undoubtedly a bottom feeding scam artist. But I was able to get her “Company” name and location.

- BigA replies to Mrs. E.P.| 1 replyWell you should have told him to send you the dunning letter in the mail like they are required to by law.
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

- Mrs. E.P. replies to BigAThank you BigA for the information. It is very helpful, these people sound so convincing and intimidating at first. I know anyone can be their target, but when they try to scam elderly on limited income with their threats, it's so sickening.
- Kat replies to sThat's because the DNC registry only applies to telemarketers, not debt collectors. And scammers, of course, simply ignore it.
