Automated call from unknown number in the U.S. Says it's from IRS taking legal actions against you.

Says the IRS will be starting legal proceedings against me yet wanted my current address. Heavy East Indian accent but his name was "David Jones." IRS doesn't contact by email OR automated calling.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

Got a call from this number acting as I.R.S.sounded real was very upsetting, he said his name was Nash Taylor, gave me a badge number, case number, was very demanded,knew information that was private. Threats were very real,call the I.R.S.after hanging up,found it was a scam! Left a message on my voicemail.

I just called them back and asked if they were interested in lowering their mortgage payments.

They claimed to be the IRS suing me.  Nope.

The scammer is calling again! Suppose to have 2, 000.00 BY Monday, I should have  known when I started to choke and cough! And he said please get a glass of water and calm yourself down! I  feel stupid and used, sic, he ask if I could ask for  money,from my parents , which upset me further when I told him my mother died last year after a long agonizing cancer illiness, his response was he lost his parents at age of 8 years! Was a orphan !! He actually made me feel sorry for him.! I file a complaint with T.I.G.A  and feel if this call would have been to a elder it would definitely give a heart atttack!! I know the scammer will not be caught,and I will be just another victim, as many before me.

They said they were co,ing to my home for paperwork

I was called on my cell phone from the number +8888172974 and told that all of my assets and accounts with my bank were going to be frozen within 24 hours and that I was in big trouble with the IRS.  I called my bank and there is nothing out of the ordinary there or going to be in the near future.  I then typed this number into Google and found out that it is a scam to try to extort money out of my accounts.  I am extremely upset about this, and don't need criminals calling my cell number and trying to extort money from me.  BEWARE!

A man claiming to be with the IRA he gave me his badge #, case # and claimed his name was Harry Peterson and clearly he was a foreigner. Told me I was being sued by the IRS and my bank accounts and my possibly my house was going to taken away.  I listened for a while and told the man that I would have to call back with my attorney on the line.  He hung up. I called the number back and told him I had call the IRS and was told it was a scam. Of course he hung up very quickly.

Life is short and  there is always somebody trying to take your hard earn money away unfairly. It is a poorly recorded message and threatening but not persuasive.

I am turning 65 and I don't engage on the telephone unless I know the individual. These characters are getting bold and leaving a telephone message however no name but they do indicate that they are calling from the IRS and will monitor your assets and will have someone contact to complete paperwork..

Be advised that the IRS recently had a security breach and information was stolen.. If the IRS wants your attention they will either send you a letter or a Registered Letter with their request. Don't allow strangers in your home at anytime. This could cost more than your money. It could cost you your life. Do not become a victim to this criminal.

You do NOT get a warning call if a summons is coming.

AND the real IRS mails letters if there is a problem.

the first thing you should do is to carefully read Alfalfa's excellent post in which he tells you what you need to know and to do.

Alfalfa is correct.  The IRS will mail you any notifications.  They give you time to correct or pay for any discrepancies.
My recent experience with the 1-888-817-2974 is a very robotic sounding voicemail.  The number showed on my caller I.D as I typed it.  Not "IRS", not as my local DMV or police department.  But the threat was the same.  I have transcribe the voicemail to the best of my ability as there were some weird pauses:

Warning:   For the next 24 hours we will be marking in on your assets and your banking accounts due to your inability to settle your ??? with the IRS.  A bill collection officer will ?visit? you? to? complete paperworks. If you have any questions call our tax preparer 18888172974.  I will repeat it, 18888172974. If you want to talk to one of our representatives then press 1 or else press 1 to disconnect.
End of call.

i had an automated message saying I defaulted on my taxes and they were garnishing my bank account. I could call them back at 888-817-2974. So I did call them back, to tell them to take me off their spam-fest list and it said the number couldn't be dialed from this line. Total spam.

Caller ID comes up "unavailable" yet it's supposed to be the IRS!  What a joke. Very stilted computer voice, tells you to push 1 for private citizen and push 2 for business accounts.  So, I called this number to let them know I'm "on to you" and guess what, both #s 1 and 2, voice message boxes were full or I could contact them at www.IRS.gov.  If I did not contact them immediately my bank account would be seized and an IRS agent would come to my door within the next few days. My call number block doesn't work on these numbers and I'm getting several different scam calls a week.  I have an unlisted number and I don't appreciate whoever has sold my number to these idiots.  This is a complete SCAM. Do not buy into this!
