You can request them to stop calls to you in 2 methods. By answering the call and verbally requesting so, but gather name of rep before requesting so and they have 10 days not to call you legally and then they can start again. I recommend sending a certified mail to the company requesting them to stop. Legally they must stop indefinately or they violate "Fair Debt Collection Reporting Act" and you can report or sue them with the proof you have.

Best thing to do is just let the answering machine get it or change your phone #.

    Irritated Bystander
They call, leave messages on my machine asking for someone I've never heard of.  Do they just scour the phone book for people with the same last name and then call them all hoping to hit the right person?  Shameful really.

This is a collection agency.  They are calling my number because one of my neighbors has something they want to talk to them about.  They are looking up numbers near addresses of people that won't answer their phones. Ridiculous!

    Day
I've been receiving calls from this company for a while now, asking for somebody who does not live here. Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to speak to an actual person. The most recent time, however, I let my machine take the call, and a long message was left which included their website, lhrpay.com

I went to that site, where I was given the option to chat with a consultant. I chose to do so, and within a matter of minutes he agreed to take my number off their list.

They called asking for some unknown (to me) person. The recorded female voice had a British accent; perhaps to make them seem classy/upscale?  I thought it was just plain silly. They said they were calling Heather SomethingOrOther to collect a debt.

    Sorry, wrong number!

    Frustrated
I get really frustrated on auto phone dialing programs.  In reading these other posts I feel confident that there is nothing that we owe from a bad debt.  If it was truly a bad debt, you would get something in the mail.  Doesn't any type of collection attempts need to be done in writing?

My call was similar to the others, asking for a Heather somebody.  Told me to call them at 888-845-5995 and gave me a reference number.  Not going to call back.

If you do call back, NEVER give them any personal information.  Too much identity theft going on out there.

I have a message on my answering machine that says I need to call 8888455995, because of a debt.   I do not owe any debts, and I am on a do-not-call list.   I would like them to get in touch with me through the mail if it is legitimate!   I work nights, and do not appreciate their phone calls!!!

They call trying to collect debts from my son, who died last June.  So every day I get these calls.  My son was 36 when he died so these debts never had anything to do with me.  Of course there is no way to really contact them and get them to stop, but boy if there is ever a lawsuit, count me in.

    Here's how to stop them:

Under the TCPA, a consumer has a right to file a lawsuit and recover $500 for each call that violates the TCPA. The TCPA can also be used in conjunction with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in some situations.

Generally, the TCPA does not apply to debt collectors making collection calls to debtors. However, if you are subjected to calls from a debt collector and you are not the debtor, you may file a lawsuit against the debt collector under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) and the TCPA.

This right was recently recognized by Judge Legrome D. Davis in a case called Watson v. NCO Group, Inc.  NCO Group is a debt collector that uses automated prerecorded collection calls.  In this case, Mr. Watson alleged he was getting hundreds of calls from NCO Group after he got a new phone number. Mr. Watson claimed he owed no debt to NCO Group, Inc.  Mr. Watson filed suit under both the FDCPA and TCPA.

    David Israel, defense lawyer for NCO, argued that the TCPA should not apply to debt collectors.  Judge Davis rejected the argument made by David Israel. The judge ruled that Mr. Watson had a right to sue NCO Group Inc under the TCPA for $500 for each call.  Judge Davis wrote;

[The] Court is convinced that a non-debtor's rights are in fact violated when he is subjected to repeated annoying and abusive debt collection calls that he remains powerless to stop.

Judge Davis' ruling was based upon his interpretation that collection calls to non-debtors violate the privacy rights provided by the TCPA.

So what can you do if you receive "wrong number" calls from debt collectors?

    1. Sign up for the Do-Not-Call registry.
    2. Save the calls captured by your voice mail or answering machine.
    3. Contact a consumer lawyer.

Left no message.  According to the internet (virtually every site), they're debt collectors.  I have no debts and never have had debts.  I've had the same phone number for 17 years.  Therefore, they're probably fishing (calling everyone with a similar name or people they might think are related in order to find a particular debtor).
