They called Saturday morning at 8:40am and left no message. I called the number back and a recording said "we are currently closed, please call back during regular business hours". They didn't say who they were but if they are closed how come they called?

Not sure which agency this one is.  It's either American Express or Citibank, but Citi is the most likely suspect.  I took a major pay cut a few months back and like most Americans, I am finding it hard to pay my "once upon a time" simple bills.  I've been dodging Citibank now for almost 4 months.  Their rates are outrageous and the numbers are stacking up.  Every three to four weeks, Citi will change the numbers they contact you from in hopes of catching you off guard.  I also found out, though I haven't been able to prove it yet, that one of these "Credit Collection Agencies" sold my information to someone else.  I have also been receiving automated calls about a pool cleaning service in Texas and a life insurance scam in California.  I have done my research and was advised by a credit counseling service not to give any information over the phone.  Use certified letters to contact the collection agencies stating that you only want to be contacted by mail and get a receipt for the delivery of the letters.  If they call you at work, tell them you cannot receive personal calls and you will report them if they call back.  Should friends and family get contacted by the collection folks, they also have the right to state "they do not live here, I will report you if you call back, do not call here again."  Times are tough and in order to deal with these people, you must be pro-active about your personal situation.  Talk to the creditors at least once.  Make them understand that there is nothing you can do.  By at least telling them "Sorry, I can't pay you" they will have that information on file and their attitude towards you as a person(most of the time) will lighten up a bit.
