They make you believe they are from Webroot and tell you your computer is at high risk just to let you think you must buy a genuine microsoft application and must go to a Microsoft store nearby.  They take control of your computer to supposedly analyze damage or high threat on your computer.  They also make you believe your previous Webroot control number is no longer valid and that the new phone number is now 1-888-883-6222 which is a big scam

Caller said that my computer was being hacked and that the company he worked for could remedy the situation. He took control of my computer and installed a bunch of ad block programs. The whole thing cost me $2999.99

Now take the computer to a LOCAL, certified repair shop & have them check the probable garbage that caller put on your machine.   There is no way a cold caller could tell if there was a problem with the unit - and for $3000 - call your card company & file a fraud charge.

I was called by another "scammer" from 844 295-1333.  They got into my computer and asked me about any problems I had had in the past.  I told them that there was a problem with one of my credit cards and they asked me for the customer service number for the credit card, the reason being that they were going to ask customer service and security to monotor the card for 48 hours.  They contacted "customer service" with me on the line and the supposed representative asked for the full credit card number.  I thought this was a strange because as long as they recognize your phone nuimber, they ustally ask for only the last four digits.  He then asked for the security code on the back of the card, which customer service would never do.  I immediately told them that I was going to hang up and call customer service myself and ask them to monitor the card, if they ever did anything like that.  The scammers immediately disappeared, got off my computer and sent me a message on my note pad that they had gotten what they wanted.  I am going to have to get my computer "cleaned" by a reputable company.
