I got a message from a private number claiming to be from CRA, and leaving this as the call back number. After researching, I cannot find any information regarding who this number belongs to, and the number is not listed on the CRA website. I suspect it may be one of those telephone scams trying to get money out of you, though I don't know for sure.

Scam. They set up a semi believable voice mail system that goes back to Anglo names for some choices but it loops back to the main announcement instead of a user mailbox. Plus NO CRA number starts with 888.  ALL CRA TOLL FREE NUMBERS START WITH 800.

Called by employer today claiming to be CRA looking for my SIN, Date of Birth and Salary info. Definitely a scam. I was on the other line with a real CRA agent the entire time.
    • Caller: FAKE CRA.

    Confused
I received a call from  613-391-2600. And they  left this 888 number to call back, claiming they are the CRA and urging a call back.
I returned the call but was sent to a voice mail service.
I debate whether or not this is a scam. The voicemail was believable. But I'm not sure what I would need to discuss.

My boss got a call at work from someone claiming to be Revenue Canada.  They were asking about my start date and employment status.  As others have suggested, they left a long string of numbers as a reference number.

My first thought was that it was some kind of scam.

Like others, I was unable to match this phone number with anything listed in any CRA directory.

The one thing that stood out was that when they called they asked for the company that does the payroll, not the public name of the company.  This could only be found from my tax information.

I know I don't owe any back taxes but I do have an outstanding student loan.  It turns out that the long reference number that they gave out contained the (I believe 5 or 6 digit) number assigned to the collection officer trying to collect the loan plus my SIN #.

Either these people that are scamming know everything about me (and therefore don't really need to talk to me to steal my identity) or this was a legitimate collection call from the CRA with respect to my student loan.

I haven't called back yet but I am completely convinced that this was a legitimate call from a CRA collection agent on behalf of Canada Student Loans program.

I've heard that the CRA has starting getting more aggressive about collecting outstanding student loans and it would appear cold calling your place of employment after not getting anywhere with other methods is their way of stepping things up.

It's still worth it to go to the CRA website to read up on how not to get scammed even if you do decide to call back.  Scammers are getting better and knowing exactly what the CRA can and cannot (or will and will not) ask you is important to know.

If you do have outstanding student loans, I highly recommend researching and talking to a debt counsellor or Bankruptcy trustee about what your alternatives are.  Collection agents can be aggressive and intimidating if you don't know your rights and with the right help on your side, you may find some peace of mind.

    Hope this helps.
