888-968-6541 I got a call from that number, said someone had a summons for me with a case number and I had one hour to call to take care of it. I wrote down the info and then asked, "What's this about?". She says I don't know, I'm just giving a "courtesy" call. I laughed and told her, no problem, send me the summons in the mail and I'll show up in court... BYE! SCAM I'm sure.

This is nothing more than a debt collection extortion scam.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Call originated from (210)568-9382 indicating they are an advance locator service and only calls to assist in locating person with a claim against them and this is a courtesy call. Provided me a case # and number to call (888) 968-6541 I asked the name and she was unable to provide me with that and indicated how important it is to call right away. EOC. “I’ll play alone for now” I them called the 888# which a man answered. VERY quickly stated something I asked him to repeat the business name and to spell it and he states what “ Alex” I said no not his name but the business I am calling. He again said it quickly. I asked for him to slow down and spell it. He then said MADISON POWELL ASSOCIATES LAW. I thanked him and he asked for a reference # I provided what the lady from the last call gave me. He them told me my name and asked to me to verify my DOB. I told him “no I will not but since he has it I will confirm it after he gives it to me” he got upset and said “I have all it and you can just give your response to the Judge in court” I said okay but before I could finish saying okay he hung up on me. I searched for the associates and this is not their number. Guess I saw that coming. I do not have any owed debt.

I called this "Madison Powell and Associates".    They are not an attorney firm.  They are debt collectors.   They deny they are debt collectors but say they are a "litigation" firm.  Which is nonsense, since only licensed attorneys can conduct litigation.  Just another debt collector trying to give the impression that they are attorneys which they are not.  The guy I talked to hung up on me when I pressed him about this  .

    Total debt scamming operation.

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.

If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

    1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
    2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
    3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  dime until the debt is validated

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.

If they are bothering you, report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a  violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.)  The same goes for endless telephone harassment

Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question.  As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes.  The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question.  Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else.  So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you.  Let the FTC sort it out.

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you,  and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.  Tell 'em  no scammy debt collector is going to push you around.

You have to get tuff with these people because,  being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking).   the only thing they understand.

Same as all, called my cell number, gave me a claim number, but would not disclose the nature of the claim indicated they represented a client in a civil lawsuit and would see me in court.  I ask for them to send me the information to my address and caller said they don't work that way.  Their offices according to the caller person is in Riverside CA.

Same experience. I first started getting calls from the 210# and then they said they are only a skip trace and I needed to call 888-968-6541. Then the 6541# just started calling me directly. Each time... if I probe too much they hang up and then when you call right back they don't answer. They claim they have sent summons after summons and when I asked what court/county they filed the summons in - they say "oh we haven't done that yet - it's a demand letter". Then they claim they are not a collections company they are a litigation company but they have no information on the so called "case" they are calling about. ALL of the information they have on me is OLD. The so called debt is from 2002 and the address that they have been sending the summons too, I haven't lived there since 2011 (yet they have a current phone#). I advised them that I contacted Capital One (they claim the debt was from an old Orchard Bank Card now owned by Capital One) and they have no record of this "account" or any record of having sold the account to Madison Powell  and Associates.
I called the number back, they claim they just got my account in their office 2 weeks ago (the supervisor claims this) and they have been calling me for more than 2 months.

Received an automated call that asked for me by name. Warned of an impending lawsuit to be filed in civil court against me. Advised me to call a phone number or press "4" for a live person. This person asked for my date of birth to determine that it was me. I gave him that, and I asked what it was all about. He told me that it was related to a balance owed on a Providian Bank credit card. That was an old debt from 20 years ago, so I raised the issue of the statute of limitations. The live person said that the debt was reapplied or something to that effect. He stated that the debt was in excess of $1,000 plus attorney's fees of over $5,000. He said that I should expect to be served and to be legally represented. I believe this to be a scam from the dark web.

got a call from (210)568-9382 about some reference number and someone supposed to serve me papers. They told me to call 888-968-6541 so I called them and they said they were taking me to court for a visa card that I had a while back that had been on my credit report. I contacted my attorney immediately and told them a situation. Once my attorney called in they explain to him the situation and offered a settlement. My attorney advised me to settle.

Not only is this "Scam Likely" number leaving voicemails with computer-generated voice on my phone, but they are leaving messages on my brother and sister-in-law's phones and we have no idea how they even got those numbers. It would be impossible. So whoever this is they are SKETCHY - even if a debt collector. Wouldnt pay them a DIME if I were you.
Also when I call the REAL phone number for MADISON POWELL ASSOCIATES it just picks up and hangs up every single time.

Shady as F, y0.  Avoid giving ANY info or numbers, any debt they have of yours is BS and they simply stole your personal information somehow (and their info is DATED)

I got a voice mail from a robo caller that asked me to contact 888-968-6541. I researched the number here and looked at the reviews first before I called because it seemed very weird. Once I called in I spoke to someone named James that told me I was being sued for a BANKFIRST card and I needed to verify my social. I'm very weary of giving my social so I just told him my birth date since is not private. Unfortunately I didn't remember the actual card since it had been so long but I remember making some payments to BankFirst before I lost my job. It was on my credit report and I knew it had to be taken care of before something worse happened. James talked to some people in a different department and was able to settle for more less than half of what I owed. They sent me documents right away so I could see exactly what it was. They were very professional with me and made the process very easy. I got all the proper documents and receipt sent to my email as soon as I made the payment. I can understand why people give this company bad reviews because most people don't want to pay something they owed a long time ago but I've been working on buying a new house and needed to take care of anything past due on my credit.

Thanks I myself got a called today and they speaking of a Bank One Master Card account from 2004-2008 they claim saying they taking me to court for $2000 and I told them how they know it’s me I don’t recall a Bank One then I told them I’m disputing it he tells me I can dispute it in court and they already file with the court in 2008 to keep it open for 10 years... I told them you haven’t served me and I am reporting them!!! He had no idea who called me when I asked for the attorney on my case

I have never heard of "Bank One".  In any case, when you dispute the debt it has to be in writing.  A debt validation letter should be sent by certified, return receipt mail so that you can prove the received it.  He cannot "file with the court in 2008 to keep it open for 10 years".  That isn't how it works.  CWG40 has posted the company information.  You can use that to write that letter and to file complaints with the federal and state agencies I have posted links to.

Just got a robo-call from 888-568-5641.  Madison Powell and associates. wanted someone I had never heard of. Gave me a reference number. I tried to call the number back but it was an invalid number. Same one that showed up on my phone though.  I am guessing maybe they spoofed the phone number they were calling from? The number looks exceptionally similar to other numbers in this thread.
