did you call the number to find out about the check to see if it was real and what was the catch

YES it's a scam.  1-905-598-4014 was on a letter I received from "Powerpoint Financial Inc" of Ontario, Canada, telling me I was a declared winner of the "North Mega Sweepstakes" and included a check for $4890.00 but the letter stated "do not attempt to use this check until you call us" and that a "tax amount of $2985.00 US Dollars is to be paid by Moneygram or Western Union."
The check is probably "real" but no doubt there is no money in the account thus anyone trying to cash it would get a bounced-check fee, PLUS ANY offer that tells you to perform any sort of financial transaction by Western Union is a rip-off (you can't ever get any money back, and person who receives it is pretty much untraceable). Be Aware!

SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband first called to identify that there was not an Eaglebank in Bethesda Md. He was angry that they had attempted to scam us by mail so he called the number to let them know he was filing a report and that "Bill Hensley" (who spoke with a Middle Eastern accent) was a fraud....he was threatened(I will break your neck etc) We filed a police report ... (thankfully the number that he called didn't rack up phone bill charges... my husband wasn't aware of that being, yet another, scam).

Thanks for the information.  I just got the same check and letter in the mail from this Powerpoint Finacial.  You know the old saying "If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't?"  Well, I didn't try to call the 1-905-598-4014 number.  Instead, I decided to research the number a bit and came across this website.  Thanks for the information.  If I couldn't find anything negative about the number, I probably would have tried to call 'em.  Keep up the good work!
