I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
. - Orlando flIntroduced herself as IRS.. Feds will not use acronyms during intro. Then told me her total was "special investigative officer" which doesn't exist in the 1811 status which all IRS agents are.. then the best part was her name " Michelle Watson" really??? - Jeanette BennettMessage from woman with strong accent claiming to be Kelly Watson Chief investigating officer with IRS. Left a message on my mobile phone talking about tax fraud, didn't ask for no one specific. I returned message and to speak to Ms Watson and of course she was unavailable, and the guy which was Indian decent stated he could help me if I tell him what my name was and the purpose of the call. Then he went on to tell me from 2010 to 2016, I have tax fraud and invasion against me. I went off, I told him every year they come up with some kind of scam to try to get people hard earned money. They didn't get nothing last year and their not getting anything this year. The IRS can write me and inform me of what I owe them and we settle that way ONLY.

Everyone please note:
Effective in April of 2017, the IRS will start using private debt collectors who may, in fact contact you. Note the IRS will notify you by mail that your account is being turned over to a private group. The private collector will then send you another letter. They may call you after that point.

This seems to be a new attempt to scare people since the old ones aren't working as well as they used to.
