Rec'd Text message from the above number trying to convince us that an item on Craigslist wasn't worth what we were asking.  We had already researched this and found what we had was selling on other venues for approx. 2.5 times what we were asking.

Sounds to me like you would be this person who's feeling got hurt because you are probably the person who insulted them in the first place.  It is not a "polite negotiation" when you tell someone their item isn't worth what they are asking, especially when you haven't even viewed it in person to make such a determination.  If you think the price was too high, you make a reasonable offer or simply shop elsewhere.
