As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.
2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)
3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:
https://800notes.com/forum/ta-a9526ebadc65cf9 ... 558497927242748 - ChrisCalling himself "Kevin Green". In a very deep Indian accent. Says he is from the department of legal affairs and it is in regard to legal action about to be placed on my sister who never lived in NV or ever had this address and doesn't even live in NV now. I pretended to be her. They didn't even try to verify it was me. Wouldn't verify what legal action it was regarding then started screaming at me when I told him this was a BS call. Told me I won't think it's BS when then come to arrest me and I spend 6 months in jail. I continued to laugh at him and he slammed the phone down in my ear. Don't give this man ANY info..
- Ken WilcoxThe IRS is taking legal action against me and we needed to call to settle the debt.
- Caller: Department of treasury legal affairs
- Call type: Debt collector
- MWife just got the same call. Funny thing is, she isn't listed first on that return. We also have always had them professionally done. What a tool.
- Caller: Kevin Green badge # 11618
- Call type: Debt collector
- Kim MoynihanI received a call from this number stating they were with the Dept Of Treasury and that my husband Tom Moynihan was going to be arrested unless he call a Ryan Coleman at the above number. Looking this up I am aware this is a scam. I did call the number back after telling them I was aware of their ruse and would be reporting them. Number went to a voice mail. The caller along with the voice mail were both middle eastern.
- Caller: US Dept of Treasury
- HaydensReceiving these calls for both my husband and me. Same scenario: caller ID says CALIFORNIA, strong accent, sounds of other operators in the background. Caller identifies himself as Officer Gregory Hayes, Dept. of Legal Affairs, US Treasury. Also, "Mark" and "Brian King" have left messages. When I dialed the number back I told the person who answered to please remove my number from their list, that I knew it was a scam and that I would report them to my Attorney General; they hung up immediately.
- Caller: US Treasury, Dept. of Legal Affairs
- Ryan PeluagaYeah, i just got a call from someone named "John Edwards" from "the legal department" about a matter taken against me. I could barely understand the guy since his Indian accent was so thick. Didn't say what legal department that he was from, and that "name calling" would get me in trouble, and that i Must contact them Immediately. This is a total scam!! If i was in trouble, i would have received an official letter in the mail, Certified. What a Kook!!!!
- Caller: "The Legal Department"
- Call type: Debt collector
- Scam PoliceWE need to put an end to this madness as some do fall victim. I would be happy to go over seas and root them out of their slums.Obviously scripted and someone is making lots of fraudulent funds and not the callers who call for minimal rupees.
- Caller: Dept of Legal Affairs
