Recevied a call and message on work phone saying I would be arrested - Asian sounding guy told me to call this number back.  I have not called it but have reported it.

Some guy left a voicemail saying that was going to be arrested at my physical address or my work place.  He said if I had any questions to call 951-402-2774.  "If not, see you in court" was the last thing he said.  I called several times and got no answer.

This is (one of many) criminal extortion scams that have been going on for years. They are using VOIP and/or disposable cell phones to disguise their identities and locations, making them next to impossible to trace and prosecute. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting victims' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

Anthony, don't be frightened by these scare tactics.  You cannot be arrested for debt.  This may be a SCAM debt collector.  Usually, those who use such tactics are scammers.  Here is the FTC's advise on differentiating real from scam debt collectors and your rights under the FDCPA.

Same thing - got a voice mail saying I would be arrested.  I called back and finally spoke to James - when I asked what company he was with or what this was about, he hung up on me.  Repeated busy signals since then.

Received the same phone call by a man with a Jamacian accent stating that I was going to be arrested at either my physical address or place of employment.  After reading all of these posts, I wanted to see for myself who would answer the phone or what would happen.  A guy named James answered the phone, not stating what company he was from or anything.  I decided to hang up rather that persuing anything with these scammers.
Does anyone know how they get the information or if they are actually using it? Also, how do you report these creeps?

Left a message saying that I would be arrested at work or at home but has not said why and said I could call back if I had any questions. ..or see me in court... I just blocked the number from my phone. ..

Returned the call and it was answered by a guy who said he was an attorney named John Marsh, definitely foreign speaking and caller id said SMITH DATA RECOVERY.

I just got the same call on my voice mail saying the exact same thing, that I would be arrested or see you in court.  Same Asian type voice.  I would like to block these calls from my phone but don't know how to do it.  I checked my caller ID and the name came up as Smith Data Network.  Never heard of it!  Furthermore when my caller ID comes up with someone I don't recognize I just cut them off.  A quick answer on phone off works pretty well.  If it's a number I don't know I usually see if they will leave a message and if not the next time they call I cut them off too.

I'm guessing it's a land line, not a mobile phone. What you're doing will be effective eventually: a quick on/off of the phone, not giving them a chance to speak or leave a message. If it's a robo call, some are programmed to activate when they hear "HELLO" from the other end.

You can check with your phone company to see if they offer blocking service. Some of them do, although usually for a small number of phone numbers. Still, a few is better than none.

You can also look into call blockers as an add-on to your phone (Google CALL BLOCKER) or find a phone that has blocking built into it. I just got one that has a big button that says CALL BLOCK, and although I haven't had to use it, I'm glad it's there. I seldom get scam/spam calls anymore because I never answer unknown callers and I never call back.
