Glad to see No mo caught it.  I was out when they called today at  1:17 pm.

Called today at 9:50am.  I do not answer unknown numbers; they left no message.

Even though it had a weird caller ID, I answered because of the area code, since I sometimes get oddly identified calls related to my mother's health situation. Interestingly, the guy asked for me by name. I'm on the do not call list, and for years that actually helped. But lately I get junk calls all the time, often not just robocalls but calls where they ask for me. I think someone sold my name and number. Grr.

If you ever posted your name & phone number on a social site, or entered that info when ordering online, or otherwise typed it in an insecure computer, or gave it to a friend whose computer was attacked, or filled out an entry form at a fair or a supermarket, or used it on a contest entry form, or were among those whose information was hacked from some organization, or obtained a "new" phone number ... your name & number are probably known to the scammers.

There is also another, very sneaky way.
Does your phone have Caller ID + Caller Name display (CNAM)?  If so, you have noted that it usually displays BOTH the phone number and the name of the person calling you.  Some scammers take advantage of that, by getting a phone with a CNAM display, and then using a computer program to repeatedly call it.  The computer program spoofs the calling number, and changes the calling number for each call.  One of the spoofed numbers could be yours!

The result is, the receiving phone "sees" both the calling number and the name of the person who is registered with that number!  The scammer harvests the name & number data, and sells it to other scammers.

same here.  i had family in the 951 area.   i blocked it.  it must have been a spoofed thing, who says our phones aren't bugged.  how else would any one know i get calls from that area code.   i now have turned off my answer-machine.  all calls hang up after 6 or so rings.   my  caller  i d    shows  name and number,  so if it isn't   family or friend  i just block it.    dummys who are blocked keep calling back after getting disconnected at one ring.

Great post, Slim.  I wish everyone had your insight into the spoofed numbers creation.  It would eliminate the DNC complaints as so many people have no clue how and why they get these calls.  Thanks for your comments.

CID says V21213275702345, then going to "next" on CID, # shows as 951-824-1272. VOIP spamming # in 951 area code? Whatever, no msg left, we didn't answer & won't. Will block if it ever calls again.

No msg left from unidentified caller. Block!

An unwanted call from this Riverside VOIP number arrived today.  When the call rolled to voice mail, the caller left no message, just dead space.  This is typical of robocallers (illegal telemarketers) who use automated dialers to place calls in a desperate search for gullible victims.

The record shows this caller was active in December 2015, then went completely dark for almost 6 months, possibly while serving jail time.  Now he/she/it has leaped into action, making peoples' lives miserable by phoning them relentlessly for unspecified nefarious purposes.

According to www.whitepages.com this number is described as "suspected spam."  I'm soooooooooo surprised!

Someone who can make caller ID show this number called my home phone at 3:15 PM 6/6/2016 with VOIP CALLER shown instead of name so I did not answer and caller left no message. Sure looks like another scam call.
