- BigA replies to SKAMMINGYeah, the claim they are "mediators" and don't have to follow Federal and State collection laws. Â They are collecting money whether for a real or imaginary debt so that legally makes them debt collectors. Â That means they must do this, and that you should file reports on them with the agencies that follow:
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditorâs name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Â It also must contains âmini-Mirandaâ telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. Â The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here and also make a complaint at this government site: Â http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.
List of State AGâs offices: Â https://800notes.com/faq/attorney-general
Since they claim to be in Florida and since Florida requires them to be registered as debt collectors:

They even went as far as calling my parents in Maryland, they threatened the cops on me, told me they would have me arrested for writing a bad check etc. They told me if I paid half of the $1120 that I owed them they would email me a letter. I told them no I wasnt paying them a penny until I had something in writing so the lady (Michelle was her name) screamed and yelled at me stating I was going to get in alot of trouble, told me she worked for the courthouse and was going to file papers on me, etc. So I was crying at this point and agreed to pay her $50 (which I had a prepaid VISA giftcard that I gave them not my real bank account). So they emailed me the letter and the letter was address to someone totally different in New York (I am in Florida), so I googled the address and it came back to a $2 million dollar home in New York. I knew at that point I was scammed. I tried to dispute the charge on the gift card but they would not return my money stating I authorized it. I tried to report them to the police and the number I had was magically disconnected so they are untraceable.
- William replies to ScammedRule #1 : Your phone number belongs to you. You control what calls you receive and who you listen to. You do not have to listen to anyone who threatens you - certainly not strangers. Hang up when you hear this kind of talk. These scammers have made notes that you were successfully threatened into paying something, and they, or other scammers, will try again in the future.
Long term, you will have to let all calls from unknown numbers go to voice mail or an answering machine, and so will your parents.
This won't work, however, if you have to answer the phone at your job for "customer service" of any kind (retail especially).
