debt "negotiators".- Call type: Debt collector
- jjt2009 replies to boogiemanI have gotten 9 calls in one day from Cambece and of those 9 calls they left 5 messages. I sent them a certified letter requesting calls to cease which they received but still continue to call.
- yleHey boogieman, I really appreciate your honesty.
Too many times I see people trying to pretend that the calls are from telemarketers or that they are being harassed when really they're just avoiding a bill collector.
This site is anonymous, there's no reason to make up stories...it would help the rest of us that do have a need to put off dealing with debtors get some perspective on what the companies are doing.
If I actually answered the phone and talked to these people I would post as much information about how they handled the phone as I could to help all of you out.
And before you get all high and mighty, THIS IS ANONYMOUS! Nobody cares that you're better than me. - CardinalRuleThese ppl went as far as calling my companies support line. They have my direct line. I understand they have a job to do but there should be lines that they do not cross.

- LexiThese people just called and left me a message. There was no name on the caller id. A collection agency, really? I can't imagine why they would be calling me...but the woman sounded very angry in her message. There's no way I'm calling back and receiving that hostility.
- Big EAgressive calling threatening lawsuites etc. Lost job of 8 years due to whats been going on. Was informed he did not care. Offered a settlement 50% he stated "like that going to happen!", told him to come and take it back he stated he did not want it back. Do not offer anything, he will not accept nothing less than full payment plus interest and penalities.

- Big Earldid some digging found the following from the Boston Globe;
Debt collectors to pay $75,000 settlement
Peabody law firm also to implement new procedures
By Michael Rezendes, Globe Staff | November 1, 2006
After a two-year investigation based on more than 100 complaints, a Peabody debt-collection law firm will pay $75,000 and implement procedures to protect indebted consumers under an agreement unveiled yesterday by the state attorney general's office.
Thomas F. Reilly, the attorney general, alleged that representatives of the J.A. Cambece Law Office PC violated state and federal debt-collection laws by using profane language, placing calls to consumers at improper hours, making unauthorized communications with consumers at their places of employment, and failing to provide proof of the validity of debts.
The settlement "imposes restrictions on this firm to protect consumers from abusive practices," Reilly said in a prepared statement. "It also sends a message to the collection industry that abusive tactics will not be tolerated."
In August, the Globe reported that Cambece was being investigated by the attorney general's office. At the time, Nancy Sterling, a spokeswoman for the firm, said the investigation was "based on a small number of complaints."
A Globe Spotlight series in July and August revealed widespread abuses in the debt-collection industry, but the series did not focus on Cambece.
Under the agreement, filed yesterday in Suffolk Superior Court, Cambece assented to a variety of procedures designed to protect debtors. These include recording all telephone conversations with consumers, providing proof of debt -- including at least two monthly statements from the original creditor -- and appointing a supervisor to oversee compliance with state and federal laws.
The settlement also requires Cambece to pay $20,000 in restitution to consumers, $45,000 to a consumer aid fund managed by the attorney general's office, and $10,000 to cover the cost of the state's investigation.
In his statement, Reilly said Cambece cooperated with the investigation. But the firm denies it violated any laws.
"There's no finding by any court that Cambece broke any state or federal law," said Sterling, the spokeswoman for the firm.
The filing "simply confirms a voluntary agreement between the Cambece law firm and the attorney general's office. No enforcement action was filed against the law firm, and no fines or penalties were paid."
It looks like they are back to their old tricks.

- SDGuyReceived a voicemail message from a Chuck Nelson calling from this number; he did not identify who he represented or why he called. I have never had a "bad debt," and my credit rating is as good as it gets. Last time I checked, at least 700 other people in the U.S. have the same name I have, so I guess they're taking a shotgun approach and calling all of us.

- LassieI received a call from this number and it was a woman who was quite polite. She told me this would sound very odd but she was trying to reach a neighbor of mine, who she gave me the name and address of, and asked me if I could hand deliver an urgent message for him to call her back. She gave me the number and thanked me and hung up. I was very suspicious and decided to check out more. I don't know if I even want to deliver this message, but isn't giving out this man's name and address a violation of a privacy act?
- 2ndwifei recieved a call from a lady here who seemed very nice.. they were calling for my husband, and i told her i could take a msg, and i would let him know, and she told me it was regarding capital one, and i informed her that we are looking into filing a chapter13 bankruptcy to help us manage our debts because he was out of work for well over 6 months and we lost everything, and we just cant catch up, and she said, "well i see he already filed a chapter 7 in 2006, i dont think he can file a chapter 13."- and your a lawyer?? LOL!. he can file a ch 13, he just cant file another 7 for a few more years. the first bankruptcy was just him filing to take care of his ex wifes and his previous debts, i didnt wanna be working my butt off to pay for her coach bags, and etc... it sucks the economy has put us in this situation, but we are trying to get back on our feet.. the lady said to get the lawyers info to her asap, so she can note it in the file. i thought she was nice, but obviously not an actual lawyer.
