Calling saying they are with the passport office requesting private information. The number matches nothing on the gov website so I would say a scam.

Started receiving calls from this number about a month ago. Caller claims origin is "passport services" and started a sales pitch. I asked who was caller and she gave me some name. I hung up. No I am getting a call from this number at least once every few days. I never answer. Obviously a scam.

Might be legitimate.  I got a letter a week ago from US State Department about some sort of random survey about passport services.  I have no idea why they would contact me on that, since I haven't used a passport or left the country in decades.

I don't know if this phone call is related but there is a passport demand survey.  You can read about it here:

I would think that the only relationship calls from this number have to the Dept. of State survey is the scam may be based on the survey existing.
You may have missed that the Dept. of State wants people to answer their survey by either using their website of making an inbound call on a Toll Free number the letter will provide.  The only outbound communication to people is via the letters they send out.

Check out the link posted by Pudge:

Since you once had a passport that makes you a "customer" of the Dept. of State.  While your passport probably expired quite some time ago (based on your post), that does not mean that they do not want to get an idea how likely you (and thousands of other people like yourself) are to apply for a new passport in the future.  Since the survey is voluntary, you could ignore it or respond to it.  But who knows, your input may help them to improve how they do things and in the end waste less of the taxpayers money.

If you are referring to the calls other posters received, I would say "not likely".  (Read my reply to Pudge as to why.)

If this is a legit call and not spam, then you need to start behaving more like a legit operation.  I’ve gotten over 8 calls from this number over the last 8 days.  Zero messages, nothing is being done to make me want to pick up this call.

"Rob" is not connected to the callers, he was relaying the message that the callers conveyed to him, as indicated by "Message:" on the first line of his post.
If you want to express your opinion to the callers, you need to pick up the next call and tell them directly.

I should have said “they” not “you” - at least Rob got a message, I get nothing but near daily calls. But the simple fact is I just received my 13th(!!) call from this number.  I will not pick up, I’ll never pick it up.  I don’t care who is originating these calls, this is just unacceptable behavior.  I’m pretty sure sleeze-ball debt collectors have been less annoying.

I do not have a passport but have received the letter claiming to come from State Department and now getting the calls. I assumed the letter and calls are fake. IF legitimate. State a department should do better

Yes, the State Department could do better by using a .gov URL for the link that asks people to go to for the survey (even if they redirect to a contractor run survey site afterwards).  That way people would know that the survey is legitimate and Government sponsored.  In their example letter (link given in the post by Pudge, two posts above the one you replied to) they indicate going to a .com URL.  Any schmuck can go to GoDaddy and for a few bucks create a .com domain, but only actual US Government entities (Federal, State and Local) can apply for and operate a .gov domain.
The example letter posted on the actual State Department website shows a URL that one would easily expect a scammer to use.  It also does not help that the domain was actually registered on GoDaddy and the owner of the domain hides behind GoDaddy's privacy proxy.  But the domain was created 14 years ago, so it would hardly be a "run of the mill" scammer (most likely some contractor the State Department hired to do the menial work of collecting the data).  I suppose that whomever set this up, way back then, probably thought that since it was in a letter with State Department letterhead that people would just trust it.

I would just block the calls and throw the letter into the recycle bin.
Even if the letter is legitimate, the survey is voluntary so it does not matter if you do not respond.
