I had signed up with publishers clearinghouse and they must sell your info out. I got a letter from a company in New York telling me I won 1.4 million.  I only had to send $19.99 for the processing of my paper work. I feel lucky I only lost $19.99. I consider myself lucky. Thank you Jesus.

This phrase - "the processing of my paper work" - scares me.

What information was on that paperwork?  Don't post it, think about it.  Did you give the scammer your bank account number?  Social security number?  Credit card number?  How did you pay the $19.95?  Did you give them a check?

All those numbers can be used for identity thieft.  You need to watch your bank accounts, make sure the scammer isn't taking money out of them.  Check your credit reports, too.  Make sure the scammer isn't opening new accounts in your name then not paying the bills.

OMG.  This is exactly what happened to me.  The amount is exactly the same, $685.28 to reprocess my check because I too had not responded in a "timely manner" and the check was about to be cancelled.  I never received such a letter, so to play along with the scam, I asked them to send me a copy of the check and they did plus a letter that looks legitimate from the Bank of America certifying the check was not bogus.  I even talked to a man who game me his name at Bank of Amerca.  But after gathering all the information I could from the Internet, etc., I realized it was a scam, because all of a sudden every time I tried to call this man at the bank who had promised me they would be wiring me my check without 24 hours, I never once got through.  The phone just rang and rang.

I posted this in a new number thread also and felt I should add it here also.

Received a call from this number stating that my mother had already given $200 dollars toward her IRS taxes for her winnings of 3 million dollar check and 1.5 million dollar cash in a case and the code for the case is 1-0-9-8 as well as a Mercedes car with a year of free insurance from Geico. Said needed to money gram or Western Union $150 to my merchant bunker David Patterson, Lucea Janaick W.I. so they would take care of the taxes on the winnings for my mom. I was also given a call back number of 876-580-3191, which when I tried calling it back was a non working number. I then called back on the number he called me from and he said that it should be working now....but of course it was NOT! Scammers that prey on protected elderly persons hopefully Karma will catch up with them!

Just remember this ... if you didn't buy the ticket from a reputable 'registered' agent (who ever that is in your state/province) or filled out a contest form on your own that you have knowledge about (like your local restaraunt offering a contest for a week of dining) ... you know, things that can be checked out, then DON'T ever send money!!
I've lost count of how many so-called millions I've won via an email/phone call but if only I'd send money to cover fees. No REAL lottery or registered sweepstakes mailing will ever ask you for money to cover processing fees. Although some real lotteries/sweepstakes are required to ask you a skill testing question (in Canada it is a legal requirement in some things) but it will be written on the ticket or contest form that you may be asked a skill testing question.
It's the same as sites saying "lose weight with this one little secret" ... you BUY the book or program and then you'll have the secret ... the secret is ... you've just been duped out of YOUR hard earned money to buy yet another fly-by-night promise.
Don't be duped!! Tell these callers that you'll research them via your local revenue agency, the better business bureau, and your local goverment agencies (FBI/CSIS/etc...). Legit lottery/sweepstakes are always registered somewhere and all forms pertaining to these things will have a registered number showing.

Ooooh just got a call from some scammer of unknown name and unknown number (he had an accent of west indies) as I was writting this saying that he was calling from Microsoft and that they knew my computer had downloaded damaging files. I asked how long this had been going on. He said one to two months (notice the uncertainty there). I then asked how he got my phone number. He said as the registered owner of the software that they would have my number. I said I've had this software for many years and have moved many times and that my phone is on a do-not-call list and is unregistered so how did he get my number. He was silent. I said I'm waiting, He hung up.   So there you go ... another scammer trying so hard to get my info  :)

Received a call from American Shoppers Network 8-8-11, claimed I won 5.5 million and a mercedes.
Bill Benjamin said he needed me to send $4,500.00 by way of Western Union as a tax deposit on this money. Also gave me a Bank of America acct.# and routing # to pay off my credit card balance.
Bill said after I call Bank of America and pay off my credit card with their checking acct. to call him back with a confirmation# & then he would have me Western Union the $4,500.00 tax deposit and they would deliver my money and mercedes. Obviously, I knew this was a scam, but I got as much info from him as I could so I could report this. I contacted my bank, credit card company, Bank of America, and our Attorney General. First of all, if you win money you shouldn't have to pay any money up front. You pay your taxes after you receive your winnings and you have an attorney present.  Why would they offer to pay off my credit card when obviously I can do that myself after I receive the money. When I didn't call him back right away he called me over and over, finally I told him that I knew this was a scam and of course he assured me it wasn't. I told him I was contacting our Attorney General and he still won't give up. He has left me three messages today 8-9-11 and just since 10:30 this morning I have had 21 calls from his restricted and unavailable #. I haven't answered his calls, but this is getting out of control. He just called again, and when I get done writing
this to warn other consumers, I am calling my cell phone company to see if I can get these calls blocked. The # he gave me to call him back on was 1-876-484-2576. Please beware, don't fall for this scam.

Thank goodness you weren't fooled and contacted the law.   These guys are obviously offshore and there isn't much the AG can do about your individual case, but every complaint counts because sooner or later the federal government is going to have to address this massive wave of over-seas telemarketing scams directed against US citizens.    If your state AG wades in on the issue, it's  so much more political weight directed at Washington to finally do SOMETHNG!

As for endless phone harassment from the criminals, try this site http://digitone.com/.   It's a device that allows you to block calls.  I have something like it that is no longer available and it works great for blocking whole classes of numbers, area codes, missing caller IDs, etc.
