Pat, I think you're doing what you have to do to put food on the table and pay your bills. I know with an accounting degree this must be the last thing you'd like to be doing but I admire your spunk in speaking your mind and doing what you have to do for the time being. It's what our countries were built on. I'm sure things will get better one day and you'll be able to move on to something better.
Try not to let all this negativity get you down. You have actually given some of us some food for thought. I originally did the Google search that found this thread looking for ways to get rid of telemarketing calls. I still want to figure that out but appreciate hearing from the other side.
Your inability to communicate in writing indicates a lack of education. This limitation is compounded by your bad attitude.
Unless you want to spend the rest of your days working at low end jobs, I suggest you work on improving yourself. You can have a better life, but it is going to require some real effort on your part.
In the meantime, stop blaming others for your problems.

I talk to people who are courageous enough to take no for an answer, courageous enough to call me with their own phone numbers, but I hate talking to people who deceive others.

Lots of anger at telemarketers, who are often people stuck in sh*ty jobs because bad job markets, some from all the welfare& "Work First" crap and/or worker's comp insurance any job disability programs. With many options I missed. No one wants to grow up to be a telemarketer. These crappy companies that play legal loop holes go to places like government services where the people can't say no or they loose what little help they get. Worker's comp so they quit/get fired and the adjuster gets his company off the hook for their liability. An example of great welfare system(if you had an option you would take over dealing with crap) I needed help with my winter heat bill and holding on to my home after being horrible degraded, esteem and dignity ripped from me, I received a check for $2.00. That two dollars for 3 months( no turn the thermostat way down while at work saving option) of winter heating 40-$60 a month assistance. I would have sent the check back with a note, you need it more but that two bucks was me being able to hold onto my house while I rolled pennies and friends bought my possessions, so I could have some dignity instead of it being a handout. So before you bash these people, you have to realize how badly their business they work for is and realize employees are treated most likely with the same level of respect.
Both you and them are being abused but fight each other and dish it out at each other than at the correct source. How many charges for crime aka warrants have you sworn out on these rogue companies? You know do you legal half to help stop them?
A lot of these annoy you businesses exist because they can get people coerced/blackmailed for benefits(try loosing Medicaid when your prescripts runs several hundred a month) then you can work for these predatory scum companies.
But it is better to thump your chest and scream about everyone who can work should work as a requirement, despite how much of annoyance that job is to you. Very few want telemarketing jobs. All the friends who have had them, hated their life while there. Two ended their's. So yes what they do is sucky but the people are often worse off than you, who are sitting in your home and if you haven't done 2nd shift hours(if you're lucky/unlucky enough to get 6-8 hours instead of 2-4 hours) you don't realize how little of life you can have. Do telemarketers act as a**es, yes but after being kicked around and getting yelled at, your job threatened for breaking script and /or penalized for adding a do not call number which all effect that nickel to fifteen cents raise.... Its not like they have a heath care package and can afford psyche services and medications.
Get a better job? If that was an option, don't you think they would or do you think people like working in a cube farm being hated like lowers without the income.
Hard dose of reality sweet pea, if you do business with companies that givens them a right(legal loop hole to call) by your business contract and if you continue to to do business with that company, you are part of the problem and must want these calls. Your account and business should reflect, your opinions on telemarketing. For example I canceled several credit cards who could not respect my marketing preferences. By calling them and telling the account representative, "Hi I just received telling me to call and cancel my account", their response is no sir we haven't sent anything of that nature, (me)"it says right here dear Customer F*ck You and F*ck your preferences, we have right to contact you however and as much as we want since we have an account with us, Since that is your justification close the account(settle any outstanding debts never was any) and Do not ever contact me again ever. Followed with a certified letter with signature required on delivery stating the above account closed and do not contact. Sometimes I would play with them letter about closing account info with a are my marketing preferences set to none? yes sir. Then this letter is telling me to close the account from your company. Then you stop these calls, [***] all you want but if you don't follow through and take the time to report crime and testify(or go for civil default judgment since they won't show most likely for small claims... Basically get flagged as a trouble maker and list washed the reverse of buying and getting added to the sucker list and getting more calls....
telemarketing and spam two bads sides one coin, that ruined it for every legit business.

Pat I'm sorry your being abused by people you call but did it ever cross your mind that you are abusing the people you call. I too have a family, debts and bills to pay. I earn that as a Nurse working nights. Guess what Pat I try to sleep during the day and when I get calls 2 -3 times a day calling about my credit card debt and I don't have a credit card its annoying. When its 3 am and I am exhausted because I have been woken up so many times because of bs calls it could be dangerous. Oh and before you suggest I turn down the phone I have friend who is in pallative care and cannot risk not taking that call. I would not hurl abuse to someone on the phone I know they have to work but guess what its always the automated voice messages I am getting and I suspect automated messages are taking money from your pocket as they don't have to pay for that.

You sir are a moron. Calling someone on the do not call list can end up with your company getting a 250,000 dollar fine. Do your job well so you dont end up being unemployed. If you where a good employee your company wouldnt have gone under or at the very least you wouldnt have been unemployed for +2 years.
I can prove that I graduated from NSU in Oklahoma with a BS in Accounting. I have been in 2 car wrecks with damage to my system and my knees. I would not expect anyone to understand this that spends their entire life trying to make peoples life miserable. Just was in a grocery store buying my bus pass and the clerk told me that many people come in and start scenes deliberately to try and get her fired and it happens all the time because they have no life. At least I am not on welfare. The DNC people do not care and are trying to eliminate call centers and must want people on welfare and do not want people to work. If they did they would not eliminate a million and a half call center jobs since the DNC was passed. It was an article I read at the end of February on Yahoo that talked about this. Anyone who does not want people to work and be employed is evil and people have better things to do than to try and make workers life miserable.
You have no clue who has 'had it rough' and who has not. Are you honestly uninformed enough to think that call centers are the *ONLY* industry that has been outsourced? I find it hard to feel sorry for people who engage in companies that are predicated on harassing people as part of their business model. Find a real job instead of sitting on your butt on the phone calling people who do not want to be called. There are jobs out there for those willing to work at things they might not necessarily enjoy. If you really felt a sense of responsibility for your debts and your existence, you would be out looking for another job rather than whining in an online forum that is FULL of people who are absolutely FED UP with being harassed by the likes of you.
P.S. - I hope you did not pay full price for that four-year college degree.
Did you take freshman English at "NSU?" Did you take any English grammar classes in high school or grade school? Can you close your eyes and touch your nose?
Telemarketing jobs are not just sit on your butt jobs. You have to rebuttle everyone to keep your job and until you have been here in our call center and have worked there you would not have a clue to see what we go through day after day. We just do not sit there and harass people. It is work and you have to go onto a computer. Also I went to also a year of computer school and learned nothing and it was a scam and a waste of time and took 5 computer classes at the Employment department and when they told me they did not give a damn and considered me just a number on the street I went next door and applied for this call center and look every day and the employment office that is just down the street from this call center. So I have been trying to better myself. Unless you know me you would not have a clue as to what I do. The DNC made it legal for people to be total jerks to people on the phone and these are the same type of people that start trouble in restaurants and stores and public places only to get control and be control freaks because they have nothing better to do but to make other peoples lives miserable. I was just in a grocery store over the weekend where that was happening all because someone did not want to show their ID to buy beer and the clerk was threatened. Sounded like the same jerks we talk to on the phone that all they know how to do is yell and yell or complain how we ask for the name and have nothing better to do but to say they will get us fired. What they do not know is that the longer we do not work, you will pay our taxes and our welfare and our everything until we go back to work and it will cost people that are working more and more every day in all kinds of taxes and fees. Is that what the people really want? Think about it.
Remember, no matter how many times you are yelled at, it is your fault for calling us at home, interrupting us. How dare you get snippy with us when you are barging into our lives and homes - uninvited and unwelcome. I NEVER buy from telemarketers. You spend time thinking of rebuttals? How about apologizing to us and putting our numbers on your do-not-call list?
Yup, it's a rotten job. But don't expect the victims of your choices to thank you!
YOU are nuts. no one wants to hear from you. not on this site....not on the phone. get a thicker skin if you have to do this job. NO ONE wants a telemartketing call....NO ONE I'm sure that you do not want any telemarketing calls when you are home either. Now that I know that you do not like confrontation.....I will yell at the next TM that calls here.
Calling people for a living is not easy. Neither are a lot of other jobs. Try to treat people with respect no matter what. Unless the person is harrassing you and will not let you tell them no thanks or please take me off the list, then why do you feel the need to harrass the person? Do they really deserve 5 minutes of your misplaced anger about society or the economy or what not? And the person who tells this girl that homelessness is too good for her? How DARE you? There's no need to be hateful on a regular basis just because you are unhappy. grow up.
You have a choice about how you view the things I am about to say. You can be offended. Or you can take it for the wake up call that it is, and seize the opportunity to make a dramatic change for the better in your life. It is up to you.
The problem with telemarketing and other unsolicited calls to residences is that they are an invasion of our homes. These intrusions come at all sorts of disruptive times. When someone is bathing a child, when we are sick, when a member of the household has worked all night and is struggling to get some sleep before the next night's shift. When someone has just died, or divorced. When a child is celebrating a birthday. When a child has gone missing. When a pet is dying. All sorts of difficult times. It is an unwanted and unwelcome intrusion which adds stress and upset to already difficult lives. It is an assault on the sanctity of our homes. Our one refuge from a harsh world is being invaded by...you.
We do not have telephones so that strangers can invade our lives. We have them so that we can communicate with friends and family, and, occasionally, to communicate with a business of OUR choosing. You and your employer are abusing the situation. Because we left the back door open so Grandma could come in to help with the baby, you decided you could use it to walk in and try to pressure us into giving you money for something we don't want. You can wrap that behavior in all of the pretty lies and rationalizations you like, but that behavior is simply immoral and unethical.
So you need a job, and this is the only one you can find? Possibly you live in a depressed area. In which case you need to have an unstoppable drive to relocate to a more prosperous area of the country. Many people have moved for employment, including myself. Perhaps you have in the past. And perhaps you need to do so again. Where I live, there are a number of fast food places desperate for more employees. In one place where I am a frequent customer I have twice been asked by waitstaff if I knew anyone who was a good worker and needed a job. Someone I know very well took a job at Walmart. He is vastly overqualified, but Walmart is really impressed with the job he is doing. He has already gotten one raise, and promotion seems imminent. He understands how to deal with the situation constructively. He gets what Daniel Lapin teaches in a book I will recommend to you shortly.
Most customers seek him out by name, looking for the help and service he provides. But once in a while he still encounters the sort of irate behavior you whine about. And he has to deal with a lot of shoplifters and con artists. One gang was threatening him because he broke up a group shoplifting field trip they were holding in the store. But one thing about working at Walmart, you aren't kicking in anyone's front door and disrupting supper in order to sell them a new set of dishes.
I do find myself wondering why you aren't doing any bookkeeping. Small businesses always need help with this. If you got out there and looked around, I bet someone could use a little part time help. You could work from home. Build up your clientele, and pretty soon you could support yourself with your own business.
While someone earlier mentioned CPA status, there is a difference between an accountant and a bookkeeper. Most bookkeepers are not CPAs. Most CPAs are lousy bookkeepers. It is simply a different job. If you have no money to market with, start by listing yourself under "services" on Craig's List. Talk to friends, family, and neighbors. Get out there and bug people. You do it on the phone all day for someone else, now get out there and do it in person for yourself.
Your biggest obstacle is internal. I suspect you would rather deal with life by whining. You don't really want to get out there and fix it. Fixing it can be hard. It can be scary. And you are going to have to learn a new way of thinking about things. There are a million reasons it would be impossible to follow my advice. I don't know what i am talking about. I don't know what your life is like. But what if, instead of finding a million reasons not to succeed, you could find one reason to succeed? What if, instead of finding a million things blocking your path, you got out there and struggled until you found a path around the obstacles?
It is all in what you choose to focus on, and all about the things you say to yourself when no one else is in the room.
I want you to know that I think there is hope for you, or I would not have bothered to write this post. I think you can have an amazing life, if you will set your course towards that goal, and then just put one foot in front of another until you get there.
Towards that end, let me suggest some reading for you:
"Thou Shall Prosper: Ten Commandments for Making Money" by Rabbi Daniel Lapin "48 Days To The Work You Love" by Dan Miller "Who Moved My Cheese" by Spencer Johnson "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie "Think and Grow Rich" by Napolean Hill
And finally, because your communication skills could use a little improvement, and that is important in business:
"The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar: A Fearless Adventure in Grammar, Style, and Usage" by Gary Spina
I do want to thank you for staying in the work force. The tax burden on the middle class is already to great, and they threaten daily to increase it. The single largest US Budget items, by far, are the so called entitlement programs. In fact, they threaten to overwhelm the nation's ability to fund them over the next twenty years. So for doing your part in that regard, you have my thanks.
But now it is time for you to move forward in your life. It is a common feature of human behavior to become comfortable in the situation we find ourselves, even when the situation is bad. I hope I have made you uncomfortable enough to inspire you to change your situation so that you and yours may enjoy a better life than struggling to survive by invading the homes and lives of total strangers.
Courage and determination, not luck, will win the day.
