Greisman states that having the name of the actual seller is a big help to them. And the telephone number often doesn't provide that. And you find that an 'attack'? Do you have anything other than ad hominem comments? I guess the question is do you agree with this statement or not (a statement made by a member of the FTC): "But generally we need the name of the actual seller or the name of the caller and ideally the number they're calling from."
Of course you should protect your number. You can't expect to give your number out, and people not call it. You should get on the DNC, too, since that cuts out a lot of otherwise legal, but nonsense, calls. If you put your phone number on a entry form at the mall for the infinitely slim possibility of winning a car (and 100% chance of getting various telemarketing calls from the promoters 'marketing partners'), you should hang your head in shame and suffer with repeatedly asking to be put on their internal DNC lists.
So I should pick up every call I don't know and let scammers know my number is active? How stupid do you think people are?! Why would ANYONE do something like that and open themselves up to more calls? You never stop to think about cause and effect buddy. You may make some good points in that post, but if you don't know the number, DON'T PICK UP. It's that simple.
You shouldn't do anything. But let me tell you why I do it. I often get a name, address, web site and also often able to link it to a Secretary of State listing showing the Registered Agent. Which I often post on the various number forums - which is easily confirmed by looking at my posting history. It's a little break in some of the pages of "didn't answer, blocked" that you see when looking up a number. Some people like it, so they can use it to complain better to the FTC by providing an actual name (like Greisman suggested). Some people like it because it provides new or confirmation of their own data to file a TCPA suit against them. I want them tormented in as many ways as possible - by hearing that sinking feeling of despair in their voice when they realize there is no sale to be had at this number, reading about FTC actions against someone I've gotten calls from, knowing private action is forthcoming by the occasional person that thanks me for the information.
My phone number(s) are active. Without disconnecting from the PSTN, I can't do anything about that. I can get rid of most of the calls using the DNC (except the business lines, unfortunately). For the rest, I'll continue to gather and post info to places happy to see the information. And I'll do so with no apologies to you or anyone else, or for the name that that I use. Because I don't want telemarketers to just be ignored. I'd rather them to be out of business. And then robocall complaints will go down, and the FTC can spend their time and effort on other things.
Whatever brick wall. I'll just keep doing what I have been and blocking when it happens. You want to do all this crap, go ahead, but stop telling others what to do and let them choose instead of basically forcing your rhetoric down everyone's throat.
My LL and cells are on the DNC. We use out LL for basic business, doctors, banks etc. where our cells are used primarily for family and friends. I don't do Social media or sign up for random stuff. Nor do I click on links I don't know or shop sites I don't know. I don't do Amazon, Craigslist or the likes. I simply don't answer calls I don't recognize and block accordingly. So no hanging my head in shame here.
But there are people who don't. How many places ask for your phone number at the register? And people give it. If you do walk by one of those "Win This Car/Cruise/Boat/Vacation" kiosks in the mall or other places, look in the box and it's amazing how many entries are in there. And the back of the form, in very small print, says you grant them permission so they can call you with pre-records/etc.
And these people are some of the ones complaining about getting all these telemarketing calls. Saying that someone should do something, when they were the ones that did something. Those people should hang their head in shame.
