I've used this for quick questions and found them to be prompt and completely free. Big A is absolutely right. You won't know anything till you or your lawyer look at the papers.
Oh, I'm not dodging the papers. I haven't been home to receive them. I would like nothing better than to see what this is about. I just find it beyond strange after 12 years. I will check out Nolo. I appreciate the suggestion. I may be back just to share the discovery. Thank you!
If someone did business with you 12 years ago it's a bit late to sue you. :-) But who knows maybe someone wants the name or wants to use it as a shelf company?
You might be getting notification you are considered a witness in a lawsuit that involves people you did business with in your former company. How anyone can do discovery long after a business is closed and all its records are gone puzzles me, all that is left are memories.

Now What

Well the delivery of papers is legitimate but it is to garnish someone elses wages. The someone is no one I know and my company has been closed for 12 years. Geez. Nevertheless, I still have to respond. I'll call the attorney Monday and hope I don't have to appear since it is in another county! Who has this kind of time? Not me. And where do these debt collection companies get their information. Talk about being "way" off....puh-lease! Thanks you guys for all the input....it helped just putting it out there....it was worrisome.

Huh?
Have you done a search to see if there are similar named companies in your area? It could also be that someone put your former company's name as their employer? Good luck.
statute of limitations - there should never be anyone at your door either. That is considered trespassing and you need to contact the police. Also, if there is any legitimate debt that is outstanding, you should be notified in writing. NO ONE SHOULD BE ON YOUR PROPERTY to see you. NO ONE! if you haven't seen the information yet, contact an attorney and your local circuit clerk to search if a case if filed against you.
SOL has nothing to do with someone at your door. Process servers, Sheriffs, or other court approved people can come to your house to serve you and it is not trespassing. Business debt is not covered under FDCPA rules. "NO ONE SHOULD BE ON YOUR PROPERTY to see you. NO ONE!" That is a pretty broad statement, but you must live a very lonely life if that is what you believe.
I got a call saying I would be receiving a registered package between 11-3 on the 22nd of Jan. I called the number they told me to but got a message saying to leave my name and number. The message said that I had reached northeast mediators. Do mediators send people to do that?
Why did you hunt up this dormant thread instead of following the directions on the homepage and entering the number that called you? And no, real process servers don't call in advance and they don't give you the option to pay your way out of being served. This is a scam.
I regularly get mail offering me $500,000 in business expansion capital or credit cards ...with my name and current address, and the name of a company I worked for (not an owner or principal) that I quit in 2001 and that went out of business in 2002. I'm in Arizona and the company was out of Ohio.
Until just a few years ago, I got mail with the address of a company I did own, but closed down in 1997. I suspect these are bottom feeders scouring old magazine subscription lists.
