Petition to the White House

I have created a petition to the White House to put an end to all telemarketers, scammers and robocallers, including surveys.
I am also asking that the telephone providers be held accountable for issuing the numbers to these con artists.
I need 150 signatures in order for it to reach the main White House Petition page to be reviewed by all. But 100,000 signatures is needed in order for it to be reviewed by the senate.
Please help by signing my petition, let your voice be heard that we are tired of these harrasing calls and we will not take it anymore!

What is it with you White House and Change-org petitioners? You dash off a tangle of vague complaints with no clear call to action and no thought put into distinguishing different call categories. You shriek for "government" to rescue you from a problem it is simply not equipped to resolve. Then you emulate the very behavior you are protesting in coming out here to carpet-bomb your placard in site sections where it doesn't even belong. Where is the petition to outlaw spurious, ill-considered petitions?!

It's another scheme for the gubmint to make the gullible think its on their side, much like the DNCL. What kind of "petitioners" would you expect it to attract?

I had that very thought earlier this evening, but knowing politicians only act in their own interest, I thought of another angle, one which might motivate some sort of action.

Let's petition them to tax the petitions.  Say $500 to create a petition, $50 each to the first 100 signers, $25 each up to 1000 signers, and $5 each thereafter.  Any petition which fails to garner at least 1,000 signers would result in a $1500 "nuisance petition" penalty for the petition's creator.  All proceeds to go into an executive office slush fund for which no accounting is required. (That ought to put this on the fast track.)

Anyone want to formalize this and submit it to the petition site?

Since you seem to enjoy these unwanted calls, then knock yourself out.
Your the one who pays your phone bill every month for these jerks to ring your phone off the hook.
Since you all love to sit on your computer so much and do nothing but b**ch and complain about someone trying to make a difference...why don't you put that mouth to some good use and do something constructive instead of destructive? Hmmm

The only thing politicians understand is the voting booth. Vote out the scalawags who approved these phone service changes about 2006, and vote into office people who will respect the citizens they represent. Remember, someone is making a lot of money out of these rackets. We are at war with these monsters to preserve our privacy. NOTE: A persistent, large turn-out of people on politicians' office doorsteps, and writing campaigns on the internet and through the regular post (such as used by a group called Levees.org to fight the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers), and determined leadership to organize where and when to be outspoken -- THAT is what works.

Money is the only thing that works. Replace a republican with a democrat or vice versa and the result is the same.

Which is precisely why these petitions are a waste of time.

Ms. Owen, you are *NOT* speaking on my behalf. You've not even drafted a petition, nor have you bothered to draft what you did in valid English sentences. What you have is exactly what I was decrying and have seen many times before. It's yet another disjointed pile of emotionally driven complaints which demonstrate that you have not devoted even ten seconds to studying:

- the current telecomm landscape, or
- what rights and benefits the relevant federal laws *actually provide*, or
- the responses expected of regulators receiving *properly filed* complaints

Those of us who have done that homework recognize clearly that government can facilitate our battles but it cannot fight them all for us. Maybe you could take a few minutes to pluck out random contributions to this site -- the one you plastered last week with your drive-by spamming -- and witness all the "nothing" thoughtful people are doing every day to cut off the nuisance call noise *AT ITS SOURCE*, by reporting what they do and challenging the things they say, in hopes of reducing the number of victims of fraud and abuse. Some go further and send their tormentors simple demand letters, and then a court summons if needed. Others suggest effective filtering and countermeasures for callers the laws can't touch.  

What those same thoughtful types won't do is bucket-mouth to their peers at the first hint of a different angle on a problem. They certainly don't think their offerings are so gods-awful brilliant and vital to the security of the free world that they justify *breaking the website rules* and again *creating the same kind of noise* being protested.

You screech for "an end to harrasing phone calls". Define "harassment". Every call not from a relative? Calls which are legal but you personally dislike? Calls which are legal because you failed to prohibit them? That definition matters because when you face a judge screaming "harassment" you will get different opinions from her and your opposing counsel. Get it wrong and your next stop is the Clerk's desk to pay your judgment for the defendant.

You want to outlaw all "robocalls"? That means killing off automated messages from medical providers and emergency alert systems like CodeRED. You want surveyors obliterated? Now you've obstructed the US Census Bureau, which continually uses the phone for surveys *mandated by Congress*.

At your present rate of signature acquisition, you'll have a whopping 30 people agreeing with your ill-expressed cause by the deadline. The lower the turnout, the more faith I will have in all of us finding smarter solutions to the various problems nuisance callers pose.

I do my part by contacting the FTC & FCC.
That is all I have to say to you on this.

And as an example of how useful these petitions are I recall that the petition for the U.S. to build a "Death Star" easily topped 25,000 votes well before its deadline. :)

Where was I? I would have loved to see that!

That just proves people will start a petition for anything.
