Getting calls from an "incomplete" number 957-025-182

    what the...?

The caller ID on my phone says (957) 025-182 which makes no sense since it's not a 10-digit number.  This caller has left 2 voice mails today, both of which begin with muffled noises.  About 2 seconds later, the caller hangs up.

What kind of number is this, and how is it possible that someone can use a 9-digit phone number?

    Weird.

Not only is that displayed number weird for being only 9 digits, but the "exchange code" (the 3 digits after the area code) cannot begin with a 0 or a 1 in a valid North American phone number. The exchange code your CID is displaying is "025", which is invalid. Drop the area code off, and you have a phone number like this: 025-1821 . . . . That wouldn't work.

Now for how this crap happens. Those funky numbers on call displays are a result of 2 things:
    1. A telemarketing or scamming organization that is big enough to own its own telephone switching equipment or "Central Office". That way they can program up the switching equipment themselves with an invalid area code or fake phone numbers to display when it routes outgoing calls from their office onto the networks of "real" telephone companies who handle the call connection to the unfortunate customer.
    and
    2. "Real" phone companies that carry the calls that have notoriously poor or non-existent security systems for checking CID info, and a notoriously apathetic attitude about taking action against any entity abusing the technology and their own customers who are receiving the calls.

I had this exact same number come up on my cell phone this morning.  I ignored it.

What's probably happening is that the caller is spoofing his Caller ID and just forgot to put in the correct number of digits. With VOIP (that is, Internet) phone connections anyone can put in a fake Caller ID.

I do not use adult web sites and yet, have had the same experiences as the original poster.  To speculate about adult web site use does not help in correctly identifying  the problem with such numbers.

What seems odd to me is that this thread has been dormant for 2 years, so that means someone went to a lot of trouble to resurrect it.  And with a nonsensical post to boot.

For the past weeks I have received at least two calls a day from 323-021-2458. I've tried calling back but all I get is a response that says invalid number.

What does your post have to do with this thread topic?   Wait - I know - nothing!
You need to post your report on this (complete but clearly spoofed) number on the appropriate number thread.
