NANP numbers are ten-digit numbers consisting of a three-digit Numbering Plan Area (NPA) code, commonly called an area code, followed by a seven-digit local number. The format is usually represented as

    NXX-NXX-XXXX
where N is any digit from 2 through 9 and X is any digit from 0 through 9.

In my part of Orange County, California (at least), *every call* on a land line must include the leading "1", before the area code and number.

Most cellular smartphones stuff the leading "1" in automatically, but in my area, they still need the area code, too.

That is explained in the first link that I provide and is for making long distance calls or is needed in certain area codes.  "carlb" likes to post misinformation and cause problems around here.  Posts in a lot of Canadian threads so I'm guessing it is from Canada.

Then you really need to educate yourself.  Call back to this number gets a heavy Indian accented man who says "thank you for calling the Rewards Center, may I please have your phone number?"  When I asked what is the rewards center and who are you associated with he said, "This is the great American rewards centers and for being the lucky caller today you will get a visa rewards card."  You can hear (clearly) the boiler room.  It's so fake, you have to have been born yesterday to get scammed by this..
