I just got a 473 call 3 hours ago while I was sleeping. When slid my phone to open it, my phone started to call the number back for about 4 seconds before I disconnected the phone call. Will I still be charged even though the phone call lasted for 4 seconds? D:

I recieved this call, thankfully at straight up 8 am so it did not awaken me out of sleep.  My phone rang twice.   I picked up and no one answered. I googled the number and sure glad I did not return the call.  The caller ID showed the number as 767 275 9196.  That number was also located where the name of the caller would appear.   I am going to block this number, but the scammers will probably just change their numbers.  I am somewhat handicapped, live alone, but have gotten to the point because of scammers I am thinking of disconnection of phone and internet.  I think i would feel safer...

I got the call at 7am today.  Luckily I have two children and was already awake so I wasn't angry or woken up.  I didn't recognize the number so I had no intention of calling back, but I did a google search. Thank you all for posting your information! I deleted the number from my history right away...

This isn't Google. It's a private web site called http://www.800notes.com . You should try entering the web site on its first page as given by that link. You are welcome to bookmark the site and browse there to read about the purpose of the site and see what other phone numbers people are complaining about and why.

GREAT! One more thing to deal with! I was (and still am) concerned about it having to do with the recent security breaches. I did shop at Target during the time period involved and now I hear Michael's was breached also and I just recently shopped there! I have Verizon and will be notifying them this is occurring.  Considering going back to only using cash and a landline!

Seriously?  You think there's an opportunity lurking behind every anonymous one or two ring phone call received without a message left from someone whose caller ID is from the Caribbean Islands?

If you are really that desperate for an opportunity, then you are in a really vulnerable spot and could use some counseling from someone who can make clearer judgments than you can at the moment.  There must be a free financial and/or mental health clinic available in your area.  I would try to get a referral to one from some whom you trust.

This isn't a condemnation of you or your judgment, nor is it a judgment of you as a person, but there are times when every one of us needs to see and to evaluate our positions with the aid of a more objective point of view.  This might be one of those times for you.

Remember, wealthy and powerful people do the same thing.  It's just that the people "helping" them are called flunkies and get thrown under the bus when something goes wrong or when the rich and powerful don't get advice they want to hear.

I might have to take my Ringer off. These are the rings I received in three days. Phone rings twice and stops. If I pick up, I get nothing. I have stopped answering but that does not help.

I am sick with chemotherapy. I think I'll have to turn my Ringer off if nothing can be done about this harassment. Block them and it will still come from others. What can I do or better still, what can Verizon do?

Action 9: Caribbean phone scam affecting Central Florida

    ORLANDO, Fla. —

An elderly Lake County man claims scammers hit his cellphone bill with hundreds of dollars in mystery charges, but his provider has refused to remove the unauthorized fees.

Ken Anderson, 83, has a cellphone to call family. His son, Lionel, manages the account and gets the bill.

“I freaked out. I knew something had happened that wasn't right,” Lionel Anderson said.

The bill had been $35 a month, but April's bill totaled more than $760.

Lionel Anderson thought he would call Verizon Wireless and have it taken care of, but Verizon said his father refused to refund the money since he called several numbers in Jamaica.

As it turns out, Ken Anderson was the target of the "one ring scam," in which the phone rings one time and the unsuspecting victim checks the missed number.

The scammers hope the person is curious enough to call the number back. At that point, the victim has reached con men in Jamaica and using a system similar to a 900 number, they charge as much as $30 a minute.

Scammers may claim the victim won some money, which keeps them on the line longer.

“He said, 'Oh, Mr. Anderson. You've won so much on the sweepstakes,” said Ken Anderson.

The Better Business Bureau issued a one ring scam alert as a new way to cram charges on cellular bills.

“You wouldn’t think that a missed call would lead to a scam where consumers are taken advantage of in this manner, but that is what we have been hearing from many victims,” said BBB President Holly Salmons.

Lionel Anderson complained to Verizon's fraud division but it would only give his father a $100 credit. He called that totally unacceptable.

“He doesn't even know how to retrieve a voicemail on his phone, and yet these guys are preying on him,” he said.

Action 9's Todd Ulrich contacted Verizon Wireless, and a company spokesman said its fraud division has opened an investigation, and those charges are being reviewed again.

Jamaica is linked to many scam calls, but they're coming from other Caribbean countries as well.
