how to block calls using your verizon home phone service

I am probably one of the few people who still live in the stone age and have a landline phone.
check with you phone service - if you have verizon home service with caller-id, the call block/intercept is included with the package (I had it for years and didn't know it was in the package) it's a pain you have to go through all these prompts to get there but can enter up to 25 numbers to block. The person will get an "operator" that states the call will not go through unless they identify who they are-those calls never come through because they never leave their name. Also if you have friends that happen to show up as unavailable with their phone number they can state their name and get through. The phone will then ring 3 times with verizons 800 number and the operator says "so and so is trying to call you, if you would like to accept the call press 1, if not hang up. You can also put in numbers that you never want to block. If you have the service call 1.800.527.7070 and follow the instructions-it will identify itself as the verizon intercept system - works great!

Not all Verizon landline plans offer this.  I recently switched to Verizon Fios for my landline and the plan I have does not have an option to block any calls.  Also, to block unknown or private callers, Verizon told me that the feature only works when the caller is calling from another Verizon landline.  So it's pretty useless, at least in my area.

Can I ask you a question? Is this ever going to happen .... for real? been waiting for a long time you know, its very frustrating. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

It shouldn't be so complicated. I love my landline. I just want a chance to show it that a landline is fine without buying external gadgets like call blocker and signing up to nomorobo. I realize it's about comfort level and you must be ready to step out of your comfort zone and buy a gadget. Only you can make it happen! its important for me to know when and how.
When Verizon offers a comprehensive plan with a call blocking feature I will be glad to go with it.
Until then I suppose just put up with the scamming and spamming from Rachel cardholder services everyday in my miserable life!

Here's a few things you should consider. If your land line service provider does it for you - it's going to cost you money every month. Maybe a lot! For my service provider to provide (cost per month) Caller ID - $10.95., Visual call waiting - $16.95, to have a voice mail sent as an email - $15. Call blocking - $8.95 (to a maximum of 20 numbers). As you can see a one-time $50 charge for an external call blocker is the 'Sale of the Century' (minus Joe Garagiola)

If you have a FIOS line, you should look into nomorobo service. It's free and works wonderfully!

How do you get call block

I just learned that my Verizon Fios bundle plan offers call blocking.  I can categorically block all "unknown or private" callers and can then block up to 100 selected numbers.  I had to activate it (at no charge) and that was somewhat of a pain, but it's working now and I've added all 20 numbers I've received this week which I didn't want.  I had to call Verizon Fios to find out if it was included in my plan and to activate it.

Yep - my FIOS plan now has the same features.  And I've signed up for  no mo ro bo.  Glad to have both options.

says I don't subscribe to advance services. Funny thing is I have FIOS top package with caller id, etc.

Verizon FIOS call block does not work.

If this is the first time you have tried it and are in California, Texas or Florida, then you are probably caught like I am and while they transition from Verizon to Frontier, we are out of luck.  Frustration mounting the longer they keep this garbage up and will probably moving account elsewhere.  Verizon FiOS digital was working well and allowing me to block up to 100 numbers, but now have know clue what is going to happen.

NoMoRobo has instructions for setting up Simul-Ring, but apparently not for TX/FL/CA yet.  It's not clear how to set that up when I last looked at it, but I could be missing something. It doesn't seem to be in the calling features guide, either.

Everything is supposed to migrate over from Verizon to Frontier (phone, unlisted status, etc) but I guess your mileage will vary. Some people don't seem to be having problems, others have been off-line for days with no ETA of restored service.

Just an addendum - contacted Frontiers Customer Service, and for those folks in CA/FL/TX they recently acquired - they do not currently support simul-ring.

FIOS isn't available where I live and the only landline service Verizon provides here (old fashioned, copper wires) does nothing useful to reduce the torrent of robocalls.   I get several every day.  Time Warner now offers good phone service which does block robocalls.  Given the lack of attention to Verizon customers who want robocalls effectively blocked, why would a customer like me want to switch to FIOS when Verizon makes it available here.
