Fraud Charges Filed Against Alleged Scammer Seen on 'Nightline' in June

A federal grand jury charged a California man with 21 counts of fraud Thursday in connection with a massive debt collection scam that was highlighted in an ABC News investigative report in June.

Kirit Patel, 68, of Tracy, faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the charges, which stem from an operation that authorities allege targeted hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans with millions of coercive and threatening phone calls from boiler rooms in India.

Patel has proclaimed his innocence through an attorney, and refused to answer questions when "Nightline" tracked him to his son's home in Texas in June.

Yes, I'm so sure poor Papa Patel had no clue his "Broadway" shell company pipelines over the Pacific Ocean to extended members of a South Asian crime family. He's just a victim like the millions of swindled and tortured non-debtors touched by the fake collector scam. It would be such a shame if he died alone in a tiny room at Hotel Ironbar circa 2030.

Profiteering computer companies -- all the big names -- have been importing this cut-rate foreign scum, under the lie that "H1-B" visas are needed because America lacks engineering talent.

No, charitable-with-stolen-money Bill Gates et al.:  You're just greedy, lying scum.

So, now, we're left with the familial trash of these imports.

Remember that, the next time you call for support and hear that accent from that overseas, low-wage garbage pit.

I have been stating over and over that Americans need to strike back. Instead of moving into a park though we need to stop using credit cards especially those that use forein collection agencies, only buy American made products, stop going out to eat dinner, dont use computers except for business. We all need to go on a consumer strike, hit them in thier pocketbooks. No body is willing to give any thing up. I know I sound silly but what can we do?????? Sign me up.

American companies should stop outsourcing, and bring all the jobs back to the its own people that truly deserve it. There are people here if given the right education and training would be qualified for those jobs. If Americans can create a computer, hardware, software, programming etc what makes these companies think American citizen's aren't qualified for those jobs? The problem lies with the right education, training, and lack of it. There's this false notion that nobody is willing to do those jobs. Now that's just [***]. I am all for legal immigration but when people who are already here are in need of jobs, it's time to limit H1-B or whatever visas.

Patel and other payday loan scammers are taking advantage of the thing called "outsourced boiler rooms disguised as call centers". Shame on these people and I hope they all fail in their crimes as long as they are stuck in their [***] and get caught in the act.

I totally agree with you. Been saying it for years! Our economy sucks because we have the resources to make and grow EVERYTHING right here in America. And yet we don't
We need a huge, massive consumer strike on anything not made or grown here. ha! we probably wouldnt have anything for a long, long time as seems everything comes from china.I have 2 grandkids who wouldnt have any toys! But someday if we all stuck to our guns..it would be worth it.

Have you been lobbying to boycott all American companies that sell their products overseas?
These predatory American companies put millions of honest workers out of jobs in other countries.  Ah, you do not care about that, hypocrite. Welcome to the world economy--quit buying Avacados--they are not grown by your neighbor.

Thanks for the phone number info.  So many Scammers out there and it just keeps getting worse.   Do Not Call does nothing.

Dear Payback -  Don't really think it has ANYthing to do with Education.  Millions are going to College, and there are Trade Schools all over the place.  What's wrong is that no one wants to work for the lesser wage in the U.S.  Heck, if all you do all day is File papers or you mop a floor or whatever, why in the world should you get $15 an Hour??  But yet so many think they should.  They've been even talking about raising the Minimum wage lately to $15 an Hour!!   Are they out of their minds??  What Mom & Pop store (which is the majority of the American backbone!) could ever afford to pay empolyees such a wage!  They're barely making it now!!  Just look around at all your strip malls - the little stores are closing up on a daily basis.

I think it's that the BIG companies want to do a take-over.  Do you still shop at Wal-Mart?   They're multi-BILLIONAIRES!!!  And so on.

Everything is so screwed up in the U.S.  They've gotten people to hate Wall Street etc., but yet I don't see ANYONE out there screaming against Oprah Winfrey who is the richest woman in America, or any of the Football/Baseball/Basketball Players, or Tom Hanks a massively rich Actor, or any other Actor or all the big name music Bands that are all pathetically RICH.  How about picketing against Paul McCartney or Madonna, or Jay Leno, David Letterman, who all make multi-Millions of $$$$$$$'s, etc. and on & on & on.

If you really think that Americans are willing to do those jobs, then why aren't there unemployed Americans LINED UP for jobs to pick fruits and vegetables out in the field???  Won't find a single American face there.  How come?  Because they DON'T want to do those jobs!  Companies are outsourcing jobs because they can pay less to workers in other countries and be more protected against all the American Taxes we keep getting hit with more and more each day these past few years.

Looked closely at Land Line phone bill recently.  The Phone service alone is just $34 a month.  With all the Taxes for this stupid thing and this and the other, the Total bill comes to nearly $50!!!  That's an extra 50% just for the TAXES!!  50%!!!!    Outrageous!

And by the way, we're sick and tired of hearing about how Teachers get such Low pay.  Do you know that on average in the U.S. they make $70,000. a year??   AND they get Summers OFF!  Most people who work in Construction or in Offices etc. make about $20 - $40 thousand a year IF they're lucky and get 1 week off, not 12!!  And then they have the NERVE to go out on Strike because a policy was trying to get put into place that if they couldn't do a good job at teaching the kids, they could eventually lose their jobs.  YES, they SHOULD lose their jobs in that case!!  What employee anywhere else can do a lousy pathetic job and NOT get fired?  Who the heck do they think they are anyway????  But yet they are a 'protected species', so that they rarely EVER lose their jobs.  Ridiculous.  Utterly ridiculous.

Bottom line.......  it's all just one big mess and getting worse by the day.
    Venting completed.

And more importantly...Your children & or grandchildren will not end up as slaves to China in sweatshops in America some sad day...that is if they don't die from the Cadminum? and Lead poisoning in their cheap jewelry & paints used in toys, with choking hazzardous small pieces, etc!!!!!! It was a very big mistake borrowing money from China! And now they want to control our telecomunications?!!! Get real & wake up America!

I shop at walmart once in a while, and yes I am guilty of shopping there. Globalization helped to make sure that that products can be made and sold with cheap labor. Cheap labor equals more profit. Telemarketers and call centers are byproducts of outsourcing as well. Some things are screwed up and it will get worse if nothing is done to stop it. The reason why people do cheap labor is cause they want to survive. Then there are people who refuse to do cheap labor cause it pays less. We are living in the modern world where the culture says having more means power. Money is power but how long? One can't take their millions or billions beyond the grave. About taxes, if people make millions or billions, they should be taxed higher than the middle class and the poor.

When it comes to fraudulent calls and other scam, the main cause of it is greed and desperation by criminals from all directions. These criminals are everyday people who smile and pretend on the outside and inside they are plain crooks. They are a bunch of wolves disguised as sheep.

Just for reference, you CAN get locally-grown avocados (or at least US-grown), as well as just about any other fruit or vegetable imaginable.  The United States covers such a diverse array of climates, you'd be hard-pressed to find any produce that CAN'T be grown somewhere in the country.

I believe both Whole Foods and Trader Joe's label all their produce regarding its origin, so you can be selective; generally speaking, the closer it is the better (it'll be fresher, and less gas will have been used in bringing it to the store shelf).

I always tell students to not major in computer science. There are LOTS of unemployed software engineers around here.

But where did you get the notion that Microsoft stole its billions? Is it because Microsoft engaged in illegal anti-competitive business practices, and then avoided Clinton's attempt at breaking them up by delaying until his term was up and then buying Bush and Obama? Or is it because Microsoft achieved success by squelching their higher quality competitors, the net result being that Microsoft actually held back advances in personal computing, that is, made a net negative contribution to the economy.
