U.S. authorities report they have broken up a phone scam in which callers in India posed as debt collectors to bilk millions of dollars out of more than 10,000 U.S. residents.
Officials say callers used threats of arrest or the loss of their jobs, and that the first-of-its-kind investigation may have only uncovered the tip of the iceberg.
The investigation revealed that from 2010 to 2012, $5 million was paid in 17,000 transactions to accounts controlled by the alleged fraudsters. The targets included people who applied for loans by punching personal details into a payday site but whose applications were rejected, Federal Trade Commission official Steven Baker said.
Furthermore, more than 20 million calls may have been placed over the past two years, with collectors demanding between $300 and $2,000 per call.
Where's the US Justice Department? I hope they get involved. These characters have violated innumerable criminal laws, not the least of which is criminal fraud, posing as police, conspiracy to commit fraud, wire fraud, making terroristic threats, RICO violations, and the list goes on and on. And just how did they get all that personal information from payday loan sites? How much you want to bet the same birds are behind those sites as well. The FTC action is fine as far as it goes, but this screams for vigorous criminal prosecution by any jurisdiction, federal, state and local, that can get their hands on these thieves.

Great job, FTC!!! Way to go! I myself have been targeted a few times by these people, & have spent quite a bit of time on the phone with FTC & BBB, reporting them. As long as these people are hiding out in India or Pakistan, there's little chance of prosecuting them here. The amount of money they have collectively scammed from people is staggering, but believable. The monetary exchange rate there would net them a pretty fat stash, even from just $300.00. These weasels were living it up over there, while they were terrorizing us with their threats & stealing our hard-earned money! Thank You FTC!!! Keep up the good work! For all others out there, DO NOT put your personal & banking information on ANY payday loan websites!! They are mother ships of information that these scammers refer to for their evil deeds. Learn to budget yourselves, so that you don't have to borrow.

These people attempted to get me to make payments to them by telling me they had all my personal information and that i would have to go to court if I didnt pay. Then they would say GOOD LUCK when they hung up like I was going to have trouble in court. I refused to make a payment to them unless they sent me proof of the debt which they refused to do. This is what I found after doing some research and I am so glad I didnt give em any money.
I'm sure this will now make it easier for people to pay their bills to their real creditors. Good job by Tha Feds!

I'd reserve judgement on how much better things are presumably going to get now. The 'sources' of those calls are varied and shutting down the overseas phone banks is certainly a step in the right direction, but it's not going to eradicate the problem. The sources of many of those phone numbers and bogus debt portfolios were US companies trying to skirt FDCPA and the US Bankruptcy code. We're not going to see this thing completely go away until the 'head of the snake' is cut off. That is, until the Encores and NCOs - self-proclaimed 'legitimate' debt collectors - of the the US are shut down, I'm willing to bet that this sort of operation will crop up again. Just give it a year ot two.

I received many calls from these scam artists. Everyone here is correct - the last round they were impersonating cops - but I found it highly humorous. You'd have this Indian guy with a think accent saying something like "This is officer Roger Anderson"...you just had to laugh. Once he even said " If you don't call me back there will be an officer at your door at <my address> to take you to jail for 6 long months." What freaked me out that time was that he had my full address and social security number. I called my local police dept to tell them someone was out there inpersonating officers. I also called the FBI and my state's attorney. The calls stopped for awhile after that. And like another poster said, the calls would end with "God Bless You" or even better "I'll pray for you"...

It has not stopped by a long shot. They are continuing with the calls to me at my home and over 30 times just today at my workplace. We called the police and they attempted to call them but by then those numbers were already out of use. But the calls continued even after that. They constantly change their numbers. To the above poster, I get that god bless you guy too. I don't know who's who anymore because I simply quit answering my phone over a month ago. I figure if there's a legitimate call a message (that I can understand) will be left. To the scammers I don't respond.

I'm receiving calls from Robert Williams and he says I won 2 million dollars and a new car. I need to go to Kmart and get a green dot card and call 201-215-7869 with the number on the card ASAP. I will then receive the 2 million dollars and they will deliver the new car! This person says this isn't a scam and the only way I would loose anything is if I don't follow through. I would loose the $2 million dollars and that would be very sad.

I have recieved 4 calls today from Max Clinton ( of the India/Middle East Clinton's) telling me i owed 350.00 and to pay immediately, I hung up and googled the info i was able to get out of him, reported them to the ftc and state attorney general (so far) and then during that time they called my #, left a detailed message ( which i saved ) and then 1 call where I told them i had reported them to the fbi and if they ever contacted me again an Arrest Warrent would be issued for them. He spluttered a lil bit and hung up.
Maybe next time he calls I can say Hold Please, and just leave him on perma hold.
I recommend making terroristic threats to the nation of India! Cussing them out, recording their conversation telling them you are recording their consveration so you can piss them off, and posting it on YouTube. Inform those terrorists that you are sending a suicide bomber for payback. I did once, and I will tell you it was pure entertainment!!!!

I was getting the same thing the indians with heavy accents, giving AMERICAN names, threatening me at my job, and my cell phone, I ignored it, they would call, then it stopped, then it would start WITH A DIFFERENT NUMBER same ones indians and giving american names, over and over and changing their numbers every once in a while , makes me distrust the people of eastern descent grrr
They have all our information because of all our wonderful big American businesses that "out source" work. The "Anti-Wall streeters" just sit around instead of encouraging Americans to stop buying from these companies, stop using the credit cards these banks service, etc.
I know it is difficult, but if we all did just one week of holding back shopping including Pharmacy chains, using credit cards, and cut way down on cell phone use, and shopped at what little Mom and Pop owned businesses that are left, it would send a message that we want to bring America back to Americans, give us our jobs back and start selling American made products.
We should take one day and apply for all the services that illegals get just because they have a child born in America. Now they have children and name the children thier same exact names therefore allowing them access to Social Security cards, if anyone ever checked names against birth dates we have a lot of very young children working and driving. Just thinking, one week would send a huge message.

Hello Everyone, I have also received these type of phone calls, and well I was wondering if anyone here has gotten the message in the end you have been officially notify in the end from the scammers. Obviously they are smarter than what you think because I have only used my bf address to look for work, and this week someone call his home.
