- NathanThis moron had called me many months ago with similar threats. Then my husband came to the phone and this idiot threatened to send the police to arrest us. Then the [***] asks for our address to which my husbans said if he was from IRS then he must have our address. Alex Marshal...the guy on the phone got rude and hung up. This morning I got a call but it was a recorded message .a female voice in American accent basically asked us to get in touch with our lawyer etc. I know one thing,...IRS never calls to let you know you have unpaid taxes, and that too on a Saturday morning! This scamming, fraudulent fool is trying his best but his best is not good enough. I am surprised he is still doing this without the law enforcement catching him.
- Sandra Gallagherreceived an automated message that the call was from the IRS and not to ignore the call, I tried to call back but the voice mail box was full. My caller ID just says Washington DC. I decided to google the number, glad I did.
- BobbyI am an enrolled agent and deal with the IRS all the time. The IRS does not contact the taxpayer by phone (unless you tell them to call you) or email, only the US Post Office. They will not call a cell phone unless you have given them the phone number to contact. They ALWAYS identify themselves with name AND badge #. They called me on a Sunday morning. How stupid are these jerks?
- ANonieMouseThese calls are not coming from the IRS or anywhere else in the US government.
They are coming from cowardly criminals hiding behind a magicJack device plugged in at some God-forsaken corner of the world where there is Internet service. They simply use a magicJack device and try to use your fear of the IRS and the federal government the same way a common thief uses a toy pistol hidden in the pocket of his overcoat to make a bulge that looks like a real gun.
You can verify that this is a magicJack number by searching for it at http://www.phonevalidator.com .
The IRS phone scam, in particular, has been extensively researched at
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/consumer-fraud ... irs-phone-scam/ and it was found that magicJack numbers are frequently used, and many of the scammers are operating out of India. There is even an audio recording of a call returned to one of these numbers and a written transcript of the recording contained in links from the Pindrop Security blog.
More recently, there has actually been a widespread resurgence of the IRS scam across multiple states, including California, Idaho, and Pennsylvania. Additionally, USTelecom, a trade association, warned consumers about an increase in Caller ID spoofing. See:
http://www.pindropsecurity.com/july-18-2014-the-week-in-phone-fraud/
MagicJacks are readily obtainable outside of the United States for about $100 US and can come with up to a year of free calling to the U.S. and Canada as well as a free US-based phone number. In India, see, for example,
http://magicjack.in .
If the scammer wants to make the call look as though it comes from the IRS or the federal government, he will choose a 202 (Washington, DC) area code number assigned by YMAX Corporation. If the scammer is ignorant, he will choose a 206 (Washington State) area code telephone number because he won't know the difference between the seat of the federal government and the state of Washington -- they both are "Washington," right? Sometimes they will choose an entirely different area code for reasons known only to the scammer.
It doesn't take long to turn a profit on scams such as this even if only 1 or 2% of the people they call are fooled into sending a few thousand dollars to the scammers.
Here's a recent example of an IRS phone scam that was stopped by an alert clerk, and some advise from the South San Francisco, CA police about these scams:
http://pacifica.patch.com/groups/police-and-f ... -francisco53309
And here's yet another instance in Florida of this type of scam coming from India using US telephone numbers:

In addition to the regular reporting channels, e.g., the Department of the Treasury, the FTC, and/or your local state attorney general's office, you might also report the abuse to YMAX Corp. This corporation is a fully-owned subsidiary of the company that sells magicJacks and is in charge of assigning telephone numbers to magicJack devices. I have seen reports that they are pretty good at responding to complaints and may be able to permanently shut off a magicJack device, if necessary, so that it can never be used again.
The YMAX Corp. main web page is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com
and their site giving information on how to lodge a complaint is at:
http://www.ymaxcorp.com/contact.html
Note that the "contact" website for YMAX Corporation gives a clickable link to a "live chat" where you can make your complaint. - StopCallingMeThey also call from 202-506-9726 and leave the exact same message.
- SoledadSame thing. Today was a woman who called. Prior calls were from "the indian" also. I very well now my relationship with the IRS and also know that they contact you in writing as I do to them.
- Miami replies to KimGlad I found this web site, automated voice call with threats! Thanks you guys for keeping it real here.
- AnnoyedJust received the same call this morning. I'm so grateful for all the previous posts. Be aware & hope no one will fall into their trapes.
- CassI Called this number back even though I was sure it was a scam, but I generally like to give them a piece of my mind. It rang for a long time but no one picked up. Eventually it answered but no one was there and I could just hear people talking so I listened for a while. I heard a lady with a strong accent telling someone that they needed to follow instructions and go the nearest store and get a money order and send it in to the IRS. The lady kept telling the person on the other end that she needed to follow her instructions and not use her mind! I was shocked at how long the person on the other end stayed on the call. It's definitely a scam so avoid it, but if you're like me and want to tell them off...call them back:)

- Caller: 202-506-8798
- CitizenSo fun! Been calling them back ordering chineese food, auto parts, knives, etc. No better way than to play them at their own game.
- Annoyed With These Low LifesReceived the same voice recording. Knew it was a scam as I've been on Federal disability for several years which is non-taxable so I've not had to file a tax return.
Called them back let them know the number was being reported to the FTC, my local Attorney General and I also let them know the laws they were violating as this wasn't my first time dealing with these type of clowns.
Let them know that there door will be the one the sheriff will be knocking on. - Michael CourtneyI've received two calls from this number stating they are the IRS and to call back to avoid any action to be taken by them. I call back and they ask my name and phone #, then ask for the last 4 of my social which I don't give them. I then tell them the IRS does not call but writes a letter and hung up.

- SMHI used to get calls from thick-accented Indian guys threatening me about IRS payments. I guess they got a bit smarter because now I'm getting the same threats with a calm, automated female voice.
The big giveaway is that there's no caller ID, and the fact that the IRS rarely calls about issues like this. They just post mail.
