This is important:  It includes the report number to call:

If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to TIGTA at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.

Just  got home to have a voice mail from this 202/506-9026 number.  Half the message is missing,  all I got was a woman's voice saying something about the IRS and contact them at this number and they won't do anything till they hear from me, then LOL.  "TAKE CARE"!!!!  What a joke.

My wife got a phone message from someone claiming to be "Julie Smith" from the IRS.  She called back and spoke to someone with a heavy Indian accent claiming to be "Investigator Ray Miller."  He said we were facing criminal charges for tax evasion. Our taxes are pretty simple and we always pay what we owe, so at first we thought this was some kind of mistake. A few minutes more speaking with this guy and we realized it was a scam. He said a cop was going to come and serve papers and that we could go to jail for 5 years -- and that our penalty would be $30,000 for a $5,000 discrepancy in our taxes. At that point I asked, "So you're saying that if we pay the $5,000 now we won't go to jail or have to pay a $30,000 penalty?" At that point he said, "Woah! Have I ever asked you for money?" I repeated my question. "He said it was too late to pay the $5,000, that a cop was coming to arrest us, and have a nice day." Then he hung up. What [***]!

I had a message left daily and when I called back, the same story happened.  I also called my local policeman but they had no idea what is this.

I received a phone call today, Saturday August 29 at 11.50 am.  This man presented himself as Gary Foster with the criminal division of the IRS.  He stated there were 3 allegations against me, violation of federal regulations, stealing income tax's and defrauding my income.  Then he could not give me my DOB or my SS#.  He then said someone would be here within an hour to arrest me!!  Needless to say I freaked out.  We have always had accountants do our tax's and fortunately never have had to pay in, we receive a refund every year.  A white unmarked sedan pulled in my yard no one rang or knocked on my door or left any paper work or business card.  This Gary Foster said he could seize my home and my bank accounts!!  I hid like an idiot but I just got home from 10 days in hospital and having home health care give me medicine through an IV in my arm.  I have contacted my bank and reported this and now I'm contacting the police and BB Bureau.  What a scary, scary thing, please be aware and do not go anywhere with anyone that does not have police issued badge or anything more substantial than a threading phone call...there are some really crazy people in this world but I thought I was smarter than this to believe it was done this way!!  Be aware!

The Indian accent should have been a dead giveaway.

    Rule:

If anyone with an Indian accent cold calls you and 1.  threatens  you or 2.  Offers you something you can be sure it is 100% a scam.  Hang up.

Also do not pick up on call numbers you do not recognize, especially if they come from a 202 area code.  The Indian scammer/extortionists are spoofing area code 202 on their calls.

    See:  http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

This call was not random.  They know all your financial information and a lot of personal information.  They pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community as well as anyone else they think is vulnerable.  Which is another reason never to talk to them.  You don't want them sensing vulnerability .   If they do they might start hammering you with calls.

Invest in a call blocker, because if they hit you once, they sure goining to hit you again on some other scam.

My brother's caretaker panicked when he got this call. An Indian guy called him claimed to be from IRS.   Said my brother owed taxes since 2007 and he was going to be arrested, and for him not to interrupt him cause he was being recorded and the government didn't appreciate bad language. After all the threatening he said he would transfer the call to a supervisor so payments could be made. When the other guy asked him (caretaker) if he was my brother and realized he wasn't he hung up. The caretaker called me and informed me about this call which I looked up the number (202 506-9026) and sure enough I found out its a SCAM. Told him that whatever call he gets from any company or fed. just to tell them he will deal with the matter at their local office, scammers hang up immediately after this. Never call the number they give you, look it up on your phone book for a direct number.

Thank you so much for this site. I just got this call. THey did not ask for me by name, and it was a computer call!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!! IT was the same number. I looked it up, and it was in Washington DC. The IRS will send you a letter before they call, usually. We got a letter two years ago that we owed them money, turned out they owed us, but it was done by letter.

Hey... Thanks everyone...We heard from 202-506-9026 by a guy named Daniel Murphy who had a thick Indian accent. He was very intense and abusive with us, telling us the police were picking us up in 1 hour for tax evasion and that we had stolen tax money from the Govt. We also use a CPA but the initial VM recording from "Julie Smith" at above number was compelling so we called and got this very aggressive and intense Indian bozo.. (Sorry Bozo the Clown). Tell your friends about this.

Wow, thanks for hosting this useful site, and thanks to Google for being able to find it given only the Caller ID phone number! It must be harder to pull off a scam these days than it used to be. I love the Internet.   :-)

They left a voice message on our home answering machine. We live in central Virginia. I guess if you have a thick accent it becomes harder for the intended recipient of the scam to understand you, so they resorted to using a speech synthesizer (a computer reading the text, including the name of the agent, "Jeannie Smith" or something like that) to leave the message. Unfortunately, they also were using highly compressed, glitchy long-distance, perhaps VoIP or Skype with poor connectivity, so it was pretty hard to understand the "urgent" message. I'm glad it was nothing important for me to respond to.

    Have a good day, everyone.

    I scammed back
We received an urgent message to call the IRS before they were to take legal action against us. I am ashamed to say I was concerned enough to do that instead of thinking to call my CPA before doing that. However, during the call I gave some false information and he also spelled my name incorrectly but he did have my wife's name. So I thought well maybe I should listen to this. So he said he was agent (I don't remember the name he used) and represented the IRS criminal investigations unit. He said our taxes were underpaid since 2007 and that due to penalties and interest we now owed $25,000 and were subject to 5 years imprisonment.
I was a bit unsure about it all but decided to go for it by asking him if he would like to have my cow. He demanded to know what I meant and I just said maybe I could offer him a fine cow. He hung up. So sure don't fall for it. But unfortunately they must be netting something here or they would not keep at it.
