I first received a call from this number at 8:12 AM and didn't answer. They called right back so I did answer and a woman with a thick accent claimed she was from the IRS and that it was important that I call Mike Anderson back immediately. I said okay but then she called back again and reiterated immediately. When I called the number she gave me which was the same number she called from, a man with a thick accent call answered and claimed the IRS have been doing investigations and found miscalculations in my returns for 2010, 2011, and 2012. He asked did  I have an attorney and said I needed to take action immediately by 11 o'clock.  I asked why  I didn't receive this in writing and he said a notice was sent to me on March 18 but returned to the IRS because I wasn't home.  I asked to speak to someone who spoke better English but he just told me to listen while he read a statement that I was not to interrupt until he was done. I said no I needed to speak to soneone else and he hung up.  Now completely convinced it was a scam, I called back and claimed I wanted to know more and got the same person. When I told him I had just spoken to him and I needed to speak to someone who could speak English, he replied: "Excuse me, the reason you don't speak English is because my [***] is in your mouth you [***]!"  This is obviously a scam and when it became apparent that I knew it was, the caller was furious!

Received call at 8:15 am EST today 7/3/14.
Electronic voice said it was the IRS, I must listen immediately and act today.
    I hung up immediately.
I have called the IRS but I have never received a call from the IRS.
I have received corrections in the mail on my tax return.
I got on my laptop and checked the phone number and found out it was a scam.
I am assuming the IRS would do certified mail with signature required.
DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THIS PHONE NUMBER! 202-506-9686

I received a VERY abusive phone call from this number. Caller was making all kinds of threats. The call came in at 8:15 and they said  discrepancies were found in 2010, 2011, and 2012 tax. Caller claiming to be the IRS. With all the IRS abuse going on right now, I did find it  believable.  When I said I didn't owe money to the IRS, he said that I would be behind bars then.
He had a thick accent and the original call was supposed to have been from Heather Gray.  When I said this is ridiculous, he said, don't say that on a recorded line...

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I also received this call, same message as described by others.  I called back, knowing it was a scam, but played along pretending that I didn't.  The man who answered had an Indian accent and said he was from the IRS, and mentioned my husband's name and miscalculations on his tax returns for prior years.  He asked if this was my husband.  I didn't answer, but I told him that I'm sure there were no miscalculations.  He then said something that I couldn't understand, so I asked him to repeat it, twice.  He did, and on the third time, I finally figured out he was saying, "Why don't you come under my desk and suck my d***?"  I laughed and said "Ok, I'll be right over, but first I'm reporting you," and hung up.  I can't believe anyone falls for this scam, but it is the second time in a month that we've gotten this call.  The conversation that I described above was from the first time, and they STILL had the nerve to call back.  I did report this to the FTC.

This is terrible harassment. I wonder if law enforcement should take action on these scumbags. For people with poor mental or physical conditions this could be very damaging.

8:30 am July 4th got a missed call from this number. I called back a man with a very strong Indian accent answered, saying that my taxes of 2007, 2008 and 2009 was calculated wrong. That I owe over $8000.00 to IRS so I asked why I wasn't sent a written notice. He said " we sent it twice and no one was home to receive it, that if I don't pay 3000 now, that the cop will come to my house in 45 mins to take me to jail. I told him it's July 4th I believe IRS is closed and that I am not an idiot. Then I hung up the phone.

I have had this call before, several times.  I always ignore it.  I have a voicemail message ( that came in email).

    Voicemail from (202) 506-9686
"And the hotline to my division is 2025069686. I repeat it's 2025069686. Don't disregard this message and do return the call before we take any legal allegation against you. Goodbye and take care."

I have been receiving this same call. Heavy Indian accent male who claims to be Micheal White (yeah, right, any kin to Peggy??). I knew it was a scam when he used my nickname which, obviously, I would have never filed taxes under. I get multiple calls in a row and if I answer, no one is on the other end but if I let it go to voice mail, he leaves a message. Any way to get this [***] caught? Especially when he's being so abusive.

    It's a SCAM
I got a call from this number. I tried to call the number. A recorded message said the mailbox was full. I called my local IRS to ask about it. The lady at the REAL United States Internal Revenue Service told me it's a scam and to ignore it. The  IRS doesn't call. They send out formal notices.

Received a call from this number TWICE so far today - once at 8:49am, and the second time 3:09pm.  I pushed both calls to voicemail, and as the others have said, received the same automated message.  When I tried to call the number back from my work land line, it rings, then gives the "busy" signal.  Clearly, from others experience, it's a scam.  I added them to my "blocked caller" list so they won't be able to bother me again.
My question is - what other states are these calls going to besides Oregon?

They called today and left a message saying it was the IRS and myself and my lawyer need to call immediately before further action was taken against us.  I checked number online and saw these other posts.  Feel sorry for people who don't know better and fall for this crap.

I received a call from them this morning at 10:21 but I always roll unknown calls to my voicemail. They didn't leave a message so I googled the number and found these notes. For the person who wanted to know what states are being targeted - I'm in California.
