There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Received two recorded messages (robo calls) today from officer Julie Smith at the IRS at 202-506-9705. Called back out of curiosity. A man with an Indian accent answered and proceeded to inform me that I owed the IRS money. He told me that in order to avoid immediate legal action that I was to make an immediate payment (cash only) at any grocery store such as Kroger's however, I needed to provide him my cell phone number so he could stay on the line with me during the transaction. When I stated that I had never heard of this payment arrangement and wanted to speak with his manager, he forwarded me to another man with an Indian accent. When I told him that I was not aware of this arrangement and wanted to know more, he hung up the phone. Please check the internet for articles pertaining to this IRS phone scam. Every state has been impacted and they use different numbers w/some even showing IRS in the caller ID. Remember, the IRS does not make phone calls; communication is through the US Mail.

I received a recording this morning claiming to be Julie Smith from the IRS and it was important that I return the call and not disregard it.  After reading this thread, I called and was connected by an operator in a call center.  He asked me my name, and I gave him a fake name.  Apparently had access to caller ID, because he knew my last name, but he obviously had no real 'record' because he said he was looking for ---- ----, and used my fake first name and real last name!  He said I owed the IRS $6874.00 and was in violation with the IRS regarding tax fraud.  Since I knew it was a scam, I told him I wanted to pay the balance owed immediately.  He did not seem to know how to handle this next step because kept putting me on hold and rereading a script he was following.  He kept repeating the the portion of the script that read I needed to pay $6874.00.  I told him I understood this and wanted to pay it.  He listed off a bunch of stores like Rite-Aid, Kroger, etc, and asked for my cell phone number.  I was instructed to go to the store and wait for him to call me for instructions about how to use a "payment voucher".  When I started asking him questions, he got irritated and got an attitude, so that's when I told him I knew what was going on, and he ended the call.

    SCAM.

Going to report it to the FCC.gov website now.  Reporting it to TIGTA.gov is only for those who fell for the scam and sent money to the scammers.

I received the exact same message.  It does sound professional and the words Revenue Service will get a lot of people to call.  This is a scam....threats of this kind would not come from the IRS

I got the call and Did call back . Thought it was real because I've already been targeted by the corrupt IRS because I am a  Tea Partyier . The guy I spoke to said I would be arrested today and I better get a lawyer. Said I owed $6000. I believed it because in light of how corrupt the IRS and our govtment has become I would believe it. Called my sil and she told me about the scam. But because I Do owe some $$ I was panicked...... Evil and sick people !
