As published on the IRS website is the following information:
"An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may know a lot about their targets, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
Or, victims may be told they have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information.
If the phone isn't answered, the scammers often leave an “urgent” callback request.
Note that the IRS will never: 1) call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill; 2) demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe; 3) require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card; 4) ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or 5) threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying."

- D. SmithGot the same call from this number this morning. Claimed the samething as everyone has already stated. I actually called back a couple of hours later and they answered. I told him I called the IRS and they said he doesn't work for the IRS and all he could say was "okay." I preceded to go off on the guy and called me an [***] and hung up. Biggest Scam if I ever saw one!
- Caller: IRS impersonation
- MirandaWhat a crock!! I received the recorded message from the IRS and called them back. Got a girl named Jennifer Lee who said she was a 'Investigation Officer for the Internal Revenue Service', saying I was being sued for tax fraud, tax evasion, and the kicker was that the IRS could even 'cancel' my social security number. After I let her have her 10 min of talk time, I let loose on her so bad that SHE actually hung up on ME. #BOOM #dontcallme
- Caller: Bogus IRS
- Regina MooreSaid I was being sued by the IRS for past due fines. They provided a name, badge number in a very thick Asian accent. I did not respond, hung up and blocked the number.
- Caller: IRS
- AnonymYes, this just happened to me, threatened me with an $1800 IRS bill from tax years 2010-2015, told me to get to court tomorrow, so pissed off. I [***] hate people who stoop to this low. I never swear but seriously

- NatAlso just received a call from this number this morning. Same deal as what others are describing. They left a voicemail (automated) saying that IRS was filing a suit against me. I called back and a woman answered the phone saying I've been evading the IRS and that they were suing me for tax evasion / fraud. They had an old address of mine on file. I was clearly frustrated and asking what was going on. She said she would try to help before they arrested me, then hung up.
- Call type: Debt collector
- CindyJust got a phone call from 202-517-3637 stating we are being sued by the IRS. Total scam!
- Call type: Debt collector
- CarolLeft message that I was being sued by IRS. Ignore? Or file complaint somewhere?
- James SmithCaller ID said Washington, DC. Let the call go to VM, received this message in an electronic simulated female voice: "Hello, this call is officially a final notice from IRS Internal Revenue Service. The reason of this call is to inform you that IRS is filing lawsuit against you. To get more information about this case file please call immediately on our department number 202-517-3637 I repeat 202-517-3637. Thank you."
By the time the message came through I had already looked up the number and found this 800notes entry, but even if I hadn't, I'd still have known it was a scam. I have had some dealings with the IRS in the past and I know how they operate. You get multiple notices and warnings in the mail before they do anything, and it takes months.
Here's hoping someone tracks these guys down and puts them in prison.- Caller: IRS Scammer
