Automated voice stating that there was a lawsuit pending and that I needed to call 202-684-6460. Did not call the number. Went online and see that it is a scam as I expected.

This literally just happened to me about five minutes ago. I was very sure it is a scam so I googled it and found all of you folks with same message. Too bad this people don't put as much effort into a real job instead of scamming innocent people. Makes me sick!!

Got a call saying they were IRS and I was being named in law suit. Call was automated but definitely foreign sounding. Wanted me to call them back. I hung up and will not be replying. Thank you. Please look into this before others get scammed.

Same thing just happened to me.  Foreign accent and inability to answer normal questions should tip you off.

I received a similar call today. I am not even sure it sounded like a real person - more of a computer voice message.

I have received 2 calls from this number asking to talk to someone who does not live here. Said he was Jack Cooper from the I.R.S criminal division said something about a law suit files against him. I gave no information again. I called my husband and he is the one who told me it was a scam.

That guy has called my wife three times today. I called the number and told him to take his magic carpet and leave

Got 3 calls today from this computer generated voice not asking for anyone just saying there was a lawsuit against me and i needed to call back. I knew it was a scam but wanted to post in case others fell for it.

The same this just happened to me 5 minutes ago.  Unreal! I wish I could help catch people like this.

I keep getting calls from 202-684-6460 with a recorded message saying a lawsuit has been filed in my name in my county but it never specifically mentions my name or my county.  Then it goes on with some more scare tactics in the message.  I figured it was a scam because if there was a lawsuit in my name A) your going to know my name and B) I would receive an official summons or be served. I was curious and almost called back but decided to investigate the number first and glad I did and found it was exactly what I suspected...a scam!

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.
