I received a call this morning from the same number. No name was given except when I called it back, Jennifer Smith answered. I hope they find these people...

I also filed a complaint with the FCC Do Not Call Registry on the number.  Oddly enough they called my parents home which I have not been living here for over 6 years.  Coincidentally, I'm taking care of my ill father and answered the call.

I also received a threatening call from this number and "Melvin" concerning tax evasion....chalk it up as a scam.  I have tax returns and info from the past 20+ years.  I certainly DO NOT appreciate their invasion of my privacy and having survived identity theft that took over a year to resolve (plus lawyer fees), I do not answer ANY phone number I do not recognize on caller ID and will search out said callers to see if they are legit.  Obviously NOT in this case. They will be reported.

Just received call from Melvin. I let it go to voice mail. He threatened that we would be arrested for tax fraud. He claimed to be from the IRS audit dept. I googled the number. Thanks to everyone for reporting their calls here. I'm going to report it to the IRS as well.

    Scared
Just received the same type of cal  from "Mark Smith" with a heavy accent.  He just kept saying the violations of tax evasion that I committed.  I'll admit I thought it was just a scam, but was scared and hysterical anyways.  I was told to empty my house and a sheriff would be there in an hour to arrest me.  Thanks to all that posted and could reassure me that it was a scam.

The IRS does NOT arrest people for tax evasion. I got the call from Melvin saying arrest was possible. Thanks everyone else for recording your experience. What a shame.

Heard the message on the machine that claimed that I had tax fraud issues and that I needed to return the call immediately or else I could be arrested. Needless to say, I didn't return the call.

          http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Repeats-Warning-about-Phone-Scams

Woman named "Breann Smits" said money owed to IRS. Then "Supervisor George Simpson" 888-393-2421 gave a badge # of 151395 then later said it was 159395... Couldn't even get their lies straight.

Here is the info from the IRS pasted below....

***"If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue, if there really is such an issue.

If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to TIGTA at 1.800.366.4484.

If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint."***

IF you have been scammed out of any money, contact your local law enforcement to report it.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:
