A foreign sounding lady called me and said that I had just won $9000 from the government. It was creepy because she knew my name and where I lived. But i was stalling and acting like I couldn’t recall the callback number she gave me. She then asked me if I was crazy and she sounded really angry because I kept asking her the number. She hung up on me

Same as above, the lady said she was from the US Treasury Dept. in DC. My name and phone number was randomly chosen to win a $9,000 personal grant that never had to be paid back.  All I had to do was verify all of my personal information.  I was hung up on before I could finish the sentence, "I'm not interested".

Foreign man contacted me today around 1:30 pm & I told him I was at work and to call back after 6 pm, which he did.  He says he is with the Federal Government Office of the US Treasury Dept and says my name & number has been selected for $9,000 grant that will not need to be paid back. He says the reason is because my bills are paid on time & I haven’t file Bankruptcy within the past 6 months.  He knew my first & last name, cell number, city, state & zip.  He wanted me to verify this info & my age. He provided me an ID code number and a phone number to call & claim my $9k grant money. He asked how I would spend that money & said they can do direct deposit, money gram, western union, etc. That was it. The number he provided was an area code of 206.

Update:  I called the number provided to me to follow up on the suspected scam.  You verify your name and give them your ID code number, they place you on hold while they look your file up, then they reiterate how you do not have to pay the grant back, and how you can use the money for paying off bills, medical expenses, home improvements, education, to put towards a new car, etc.  It is a non-applicable grant so does not need to be paid back.  My ID code number was a match to their file on me, so since I have chosen to use Money Gram instead of providing them my bank info, this is what they say I need to do:  I purchase & activate a card with a refundable amount of $225 and will receive an activation reference or claim number that will be provided to the Federal Reserve Bank to prove that the card is activated and they will then send by Money Gram $9225.00 to be placed on the card I activated.  I am to stay on the phone with them during the transaction.  Of course I said it will be tomorrow before I can do this and he gave me his “name” and direct extension number for when I call him back tomorrow.  He ended the call by telling me congratulations and to have a nice evening.  He too sounded foreign.  Is there a way to scam a suspected scammer... and bust his scheme wide open?

"Is there a way to scam a suspected scammer... and bust his scheme wide open?"  No.  They are overseas to begin with.  Once you put that money on that card and give them the numbers you have just handed them cash.  Walk away or be scammed.  The only two choices you have.

Received a phone call from this number which said I won $9,500 for a grant. Said they were from the Federal govt and that only a select amount of people were selected to win the cash. They knew my name, zip code, and phone number. They had me verify my age. They offered to deposit the cash either into my account or to have it western unioned to me. The lady was badgering me about when I would be able to pick the cash up. She then said I had to activate some card for $200 but it would be refunded back to me. I hung up after that.

Same as above. Said they were with the United States Federal Grant and Treasury Department and because I pay my bills on time and have no criminal history I have won a federal grant that doesn't have to be paid back. They gave me a grant approval id # and 206-880-3328 to call and get the rest of the instructions on how to get my money from Money Gram or Western Union or Walmart exc. Told me her name was Edwin Agnes when I asked and called my from 345-637-8900. The lady had a foreign accent as well. I kept trying to get her to give me a number to call her back, just to see what she would say, and she avoided the question multiple times and never gave it to me. They called me 6 times today and I couldn't hear them until the last call.

Got the same call about a $9000 grant but if I used money gram I would have to go to Wal-Mart and buy a $100 card and send to them and they would return my $100 along with the $9000 from the Federal Bank of New York. When they ask for money you can be sure it's a scam!! I took all his info and reported it to the Attorney General of Missouri!!
