- UncertainyI got the SAME call, last week! Some lady named "McKenzie", left a rude message on my phone, saying there is a case against me, from a food company, for a bad check I wrote in 2005!! And that I need to have my lawyer or attorney call the office in 24-48 hours or I will be getting a Subpoena to court!! Basically making threats!! So, I was freaking out of course, so I called, and the guy I spoke to told me I owed $600 to this company for a couple checks that were returned!! Why was I not notified before now?! We are talking 7 YEARS AGO!! So naturally, I am kinda freaked, so I called my Friend who works for the courts, and he said there is nothing they can do about it, now, because it was over 3 years, since I wrote the check. When I brought this up to the guy, today, all of a sudden his tone changed! He said there will not be a subpoena if I make a payment. Well duh! So it's definitely some kind of scam or threat! And I will be reporting it to anyone & everyone I can to stop these calls! I am going to call the company that I made the checks to & see if they can tell me anything. This is too fishy to me!!!

- Didn't Fall For It replies to NoFoolI received a message just like this and when I called back, I had the exact same convo with some guy with a VERY heavy accent! I told him that I was not making a payment until they verified the debt under the FDCA. He was like they don't have time to do that because they were about to file legal proceedings against me if I didn't make a payment over the phone immediately. I said no so he said you're really going to take your chances in court? I said YES! He said fine, we'll send a subpoena to your residence and your employer. I said fine then he hung up!
I smelled a scam as soon as they mentioned a restraining order. I was like how is a business going to file a restraining order against an individual over a debt, that doesn't make sense! - got the same message today in WV replies to Billthey called told me to contact a the same number with a case id when i called they said it was for some loan of 1008$ in 2007 in lincoln nebraska. (i never lived in lincoln nebraska lol) thats when i knew it was a scam. after they hung up i immediatley called attourney generals office. the lady had me call back and try to get it in writing and get a buisness name case number ect. when i called back they hung up immediatly after i asked to get it in writing they also refused to give me a buisness name or anymore info other than i was being sued. they also told me to sit back and relax and wait for the supena to come lol. so called the SAG office back. to report! they had told me they had gotten 10 more calls for the same thing in the time that it took me to call back. the lady from the office says its a scam!!!! hang up asap.

I didnt leave a message. I did call back an hour later and the same happened except that after a minute it said your call is being transfered and then went back to music and then a voice mail again. - Mimi| 1 replyWe have received three of these calls at our home for our son who has not lived with us for over 20 years. The bad thing about this is that he is currently active military and deployed. If I could find out who is doing this, I would personally pay them a visit and see how they like my response. It would not be pretty. These are very sick individuals and need to be put away and made to pay for what they are doing to people.
- Alfalfa replies to MimiConsumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.
Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

- Jess3777 replies to BEVERL BYAS| 1 replyI have been getting the same calls. They have called everyone in my immediate circle of friends and family (over 10 different people). They are saying that I have a restraining order out on me and that I will have someone coming to arrest me within 24-48 hours. My friends and family are all in a panic....and I feel horrible! I have done NOTHING WRONG!! I have no debt with anyone, yet I now feel like a criminal. I will be contacting my attorney tomorrow...dont know what else to do. This is really unfair and incredibly illegal!!!
