- sooverthisI got a call on my cell phone from this number from a "Mark Smith" Left a message saying that it's important I call this number back. If i don't call him back the only thing he could say was God bless my soul! What a joke! Just a few seconds passed from that phone call, they call my work number and let a message on my voice mail with the same message. They have called 3-4 weeks now...and I am waiting on the Sherrif to show up! I have contacted my Attourney and he said to not even bother it's a scam.

- Alfalfa replies to deathThis is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2012/08/bgm.shtm - E McDonaldGot 4 calls on my cell phone claiming the police were coming to get me. I finally answered and asked for a business name, Law Office Dallas, fake; address, fake; phone number, real, I think; asked for Federal Tax Id, refused to give to me. So I refused to continue to talk to him. I told him when he gave me his tax Id, I would give him the time of day. Because if he was a legitimate American business he would have a Federal Tax ID and would know that threatening to have someone arrested over a "past due bill" is against the law. Oh and I don't have any past due bills.
