My background includes an accounting degree. The call was a threat allegedly by the IRS, which isn't the private caller that called. Clearly a scam. I didn't call back, didn't need to. A twelve year old could see through this.

Too hilarious. I just got the same call. I, however, called the number back to play along with them. I was going to tell them I work for the IRS. The man who answered definitely middle eastern. He asked for my name and I told him he should know it since he called me just a few minutes ago. He hung up on me. I tried calling back and now the number just rings busy. What idiots they are.

Same as all of the above....IRS is going to sue me, and this is my final notice....funny, I never had a first notice!  Anyway, I just got my tax return check today, so...all is ok.

The number that came up on my caller id was 516-746-9347. The message talked about the IRS but they called it the Internal Revenue Services and didn't use proper English. It said it was filing a lawsuit and I needed to return the call immediately with the call back number as 347-809-5928.

Just received a phone call from someone claiming to be from IRS.  Stating that they had tried to reach me (not true) and this was the final call before filing a lawsuit against me.  Voice mail picked up call from 347-809-5728.

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

Same message as others "The IRS is filing a lawsuit against me and supposedly had been trying to get in touch with me".  It was a pre-recorded message but the phone number they left 347-809-5928 is not the number they called from.  The message was from a pay phone in New York.  607-735-0885.  I hope someone catches these people as it is scary to get these types of calls when you have done nothing wrong.

Most of these calls are coming from India and Pakistan. The US has no jurisdiction in foreign country's, so unless their governments decide to cooperate there's not much can be done short of getting a call blocker.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $40.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

Caller left this number to c/b on a voice message telling me the IRS is filing a lawsuit against me and this was a final attempt to contact me before the lawsuit proceeds. Scam. What I did do is take my first and last name off my vm greeting as they used it in their message.

Automated female voice left a message on my phone that this was the last attempt and the IRS is filing a lawsuit against me.  I need to call 347-809-5928 for more info on my case. However no case number. Also had to identify that they were the IRS...Internal Revenue Service.  Fishy...
