Called last night about 8:00 PM on our land line.

Caller ID says "Vets Now C4C". Let it go to the answering machine.
I only have 25 blocked numbers. Telemarketers keep changing numbers. So frustrating.

Called our house at 8PM sharp, see, on Wednesday January 7, 2015.  Caller I.D. said it was from Vets Now C4C, which looks like some kind of calling-center number who's there only to scam people, see, into thinking that they're gonna donate money to a good cause, see, while only somewhere like 5 to 15% ever makes it to the "charity" that they're claiming to benefit, see, the rest going for overhead, administration salaries, and employee minimum wages.  So, I let the phone ring without answering.  The phone stopped ringing after 5 rings...  I was hopin' that they'd let it ring one more time, so the FAX machine would pick it up and blast their wicked little ears with that rightously deafening squeal!  Bwahahahahaha!!!

"C4C" is the acronym of Corporations For Character, a commercial fundraiser in Utah known to pocket about two of every three dollars collected. This level of greedy overhead is fairly typical of the worst such fundraising firms. C4C has done substantial business with "hero charity" clients purporting to help war veterans and public safety first responders.

In May 2011 this and two other telepest firms owned by Forrest Baker were sued by the FTC for consumer abuse and deceptive practices while bending the edges of the DNC registry and the Telemarketing Sales Rule. That had to do with C4C generating sales leads for a sister company hawking home video. In a galling display of entitlement, C4C countersued, crying between the lines about how the Feds were disrupting its faulty business model.

Like all non-sales calls, charity calls are exempt from federal and state no-call registries, even though the call centers executing the recurring campaigns are very much for-profit and pocket most of what is collected. At times the ''charity'' client is itself a closet profit enterprise, compounding the deception. Never forget that "nonprofit" is a tax category, not an indicator of actual earnings and not a guarantee that anyone who deserves your generosity will benefit.

As commercial entities, the hired call centers are expected to honor an internal no-call list and add any number upon request. Break that order, the FTC declares, and ''the telemarketer may be subject to a fine of up to $16,000.'' They can also be spanked for excess call abandonment and calling outside default hours.

Because the amounts collected are rather small, these call centers are quite motivated to repeatedly hassle you. The worst of the industry will "reload" a donor multiple times a year, preferring forgetful and easily confused victims. Most if not all such phone farms assume that your no-call order, when given verbally or by keypress, conveniently expires when a client's campaign ends.

In comments from November 2012 and June 2013 linked below, I've discussed simple steps I took to rid myself of a major pain fundraising boiler room by politely rubbing its face in federal laws. You will note that I never rely on verbal cease-communication demands.
