- small| 5 repliesThese people have contacted me every day for the past 3 months. Different phones numbers. I called them back, I was told that I had 3 felonies against me. They have ALL my information, phones, address, bank accounts, and yes even my place of employment. They scared me to death. They told me that I had to pay them a settlement. I really dont know what to do. They also said that I would be arrested at my place of employment. When I asked who has filed these charges I was told that I would be told who and when, when I paid them the amount. Who do I report these [***] to? I surely cant afford to pay them the money that is needed, however do I take the chance and do nothing? Any help would be appreciated.
- Caller: Fraud Division District 217
- Roo replies to smallDO NOTHING!!! This is a scam, they are just trying to steal your money. Don't pay them, block their number, and whatever you do don't give them any more information than they already have. Don't talk to them again. They have many different phone numbers they call from. Just block them all. You are in no danger of being arrested. Don't give these thieves a dime!

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - Tamianth replies to JB| 2 repliesOne important thing to remember if these losers have any of your personal information such as your social security number, date of birth or drivers license make sure you register with identity protection notify the credit agencies as well as your banks!!

How to see if your on the chex system list:
http://www.wikihow.com/See-if-You-Are-on-Chexsystems-List - CWG40 replies to smallRead my other notes. This is the "District or Division 217" scam. Been around for a while. Somebody cold calls you and tells you to immediately pay them some money, and if you don't you will be arrested. Absolute scam.
Being in ordinary civil debt is not a crime and you cannot be arrested for it. If you were the subject of a criminal investigation, you would be aware of it from law enforcement, you would NOT first hear about it from some scamming debt collector who cold calls you. "Charges", if any are filed by local public prosecutors. Debt collectors are not part of law enforcement and have no influence on it.
You can check this out by simply going down to your local police station.
Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a DIME until the debt is validated.
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.
If they are bothering you,
Report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening arrest or criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a clear violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act)
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now. If you can find them.
I REPEAT, you cannot be arrested for ordinary civil debt, we do not have debtors prisons in the US and haven't since the 1830s.
Ignore these people and block their calls. - Afua replies to smallPut a complaint in with the Federal Trade Commission right away. 877-382-4357. Also, contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as well to file a complaint at 855-411-2372. If it makes you feel better, contact an attorney so that it is also on record. Thesee people are scammers. Do not pay them nothing. They prey on the vulnerable. They will be caught eventually!
