They called me saying that I have an outstanding payday loan from 2015. After I requested that they email me a letter to prove the debt, I forwarded the letter to said creditor. The creditor told me not only was that debt collector not affiliated with them but also that I didn't have any loans from that year. The lender also said that the account number on the letter didn't match my previous account number.
While waiting on a response from the lender, I asked the alleged debt collector for proof of the chain of title. They told me that they cannot send that to me. Any email I sent them was bcc'd with the NY State's Attorney who let me know that I did have a right to any chain of title.

Glad to see that you got a good result even though you went about it the wrong way.  Not everyone gets a good result doing what you did.
